Origin of Name: |
The name Whiting
predates the City of
Whiting
. In 1869, “Pop” Whiting, a fearless
Engineer, ditched his
heavy freight train so a fast passenger train behind could
have the right of way. The scene of this derail was called Pop
Whiting’s Siding. Eventually it was incorporated as
the town and later the City of
Whiting
.

Some History: |
First settled in 1850 by German
settlers who built and maintained the railroad tracks. The
Michigan
Southern Railroad was the first of three rail lines built
across the wilderness. In 1871 the name of the community was
shortened Pop Whiting’s Siding to Whiting. Standard Oil
Company began buying up land along the lakefront in 1889 to
build a Midwestern industrial site with access to rail and
water transportation. Whiting fit their needs for the
placement of their crude refinery thus changing the
community’s history forever.
