History: |
In 1909 U.S. Steel, Inc. began production - and what quickly followed was
instant growth for the city of Gary, Indiana. In only a few decades, Gary
emerged from an uninhabited area into a major industrial center.
Gary has experienced many fluctuations in populations, growth, and
economy: from the boom in the 1920's when population jutted to
55,000 to hard hits in economy in the 1930's depression years and loss of
manufacturing jobs in the 1970's.
