Origin of Name:  Hobart's name is said to honor the founder George Earle's brother, Frederick Hobart Earle of England.

Some History:  

George Earle founded Hobart with his purchase of the land from the Potawatomi Indians and is credited with constructing a dam for Deep River, resulting in Lake George.  Also constructed by Earle was a grist mill, the city's first business.  Hobart began as a city of mostly German, Polish and Swedish residents.
