Secondly, we need to quit providing services for FREE. Subsidizing one class of residents at the expense of eveyone else. Residents are accustomed to throwing out couches, mattresses etc etc and the city picks it up for free. But it isan't "free" eventually tipping fees "expensive tipping fees" come into play. Who pays for it, everyone else. In addition, too many times brother Johnny or cousin Frank brings their debris over and throws it on the pile. Why? Because the city is going to do it for FREE.

Gee Ken, y ou need to expand that a bit... you left out assuring that Microsoft, GMC, etc pay their fair share of taxes.

You'll never see a recycling bin in front of my house, I can't wait a week, I take my recyclables over to Sterks parking lot on 119th @ Calumet. I also compost so no lawn and leaf bags for uncle kenny.

Instead of recycling out front, why couldn't recyclables be placed in a bag next to garbage cans and have recycling vehicles follow garbage trucks on pick-up day and outsource seperation? I don't believe any jobs would be eliminated but I want our workers to work smarter, not harder.

I wasn't aware Mircosoft and GM had business interests located within the city limits, where are these institutions located Tommie?

Anyway if a landlord such as yourself is concerned, that situation is easily resolved so it wouldn't cost landlords anything.

Just an educated guess but I figure it is done that way for the same reason given as to why a big trash hauler supposedly can't service Hammond cheaper than the city. Some alleys are hard to access. So it's easier to just drive down the city street, especially since not all houses have a contribution on collection day. What you suggest would take more time, fuel, and thus cost more money in the end.

Oddly just the other day I was wondering why trash collection is done by the alley and not by the curb. But it took just a min to realize what a traffic mess that would make on residential streets if not main roads. So it works for recycling because not everyone recycles but most everyone has a trash can that needs servicing.

God bless our workers in recycling, they work hard, harder than they have to IMO.

Have you ever observed these individuals, they seperate at the curb, then they seperate again at the center. WAY to labor intensive.

Your concerns about negotiating alleys are legitimate and something ALL HSD Commissioners are well versed in.

Reinvent, reinvent, reinvent. The status quo won't be an option for much longer.

As far as I know the HSD has never resorted to layoffs, I'd like to keep it that way.

I separate my recyclables. If more people would do that, it would be a lot easier on the workers. I have 8 bins full, for the every 2nd week recycling pick up. I wish the pick ups were once a week. :( IMO, recycling should be mandatory. Maybe a money incentive for households who recycle might be a good idea. Giving participating people a buck or 2 off their garbage bill, might work.

Gee Ken, are we limiting our perspective. Your federal taxes filter down to use here in Hammond funding projects. The federal taxes you pay would be much less if we, you and I were not subsidizing big business; many of whom pay little to no taxes.

I didn't read a limitation on the application of a theory Ken.

And as to landlords Ken, I live under the Hohman Avenue Bridge.

Since you mentioned it Obama's peeps made a big gaff for today's agenda. He's going to a plant to hawk his jobs bill but the company is exporting the jobs to South America. LMAO

Valpo picks up recycling every week - the same day as garbage. One bin - separated when they put it in the truck.

Now JCMT believes I have influence on the Federal level, no wonder you reside under a bridge.

All I can rely on is my life experience and a high school diploma. So here it goes. When I first started working at the Chicago Board of Trade, the commodore 64 was cutting edge technology and the CBOT was a not for profit organization. Geez, plenty of our markets still had their close posted on a chalk board.

We went from that to a for profit entity to a publicly traded company and finally merged with the Chicago Mercantile Exchange.

Workers, feared losing their jobs. But you know what? As things progressed there were more jobs, more interesting jobs, higher paying jobs.

So public sector employees everywhere (not just Hammond) have the same fears, currently. Humans, fear the unknown, it's a natural occurance.

JCMT's fear manifests itself as anger, again not uncommon.

Some people are fighters (flee or fight) when confronted by the unknown.

We need more fighters.

I agree with you, Bert. Matt has been pretty far off base with his predictions. Increased competition won't kill the gambling industry. Competition is good for the consumer. Illinois will definitely see an increase in tax revenue from gambling. Indiana will be hurt by the new competition but the stronger casinos that have invested in their operations like the Horseshoe will do just fine.

so sparkie.....let's hear more of how Matt is ''far off in his predictions'

It appears as though you are the one who doesn't have a clue.

NWI gaming boat revenues lose steam in 2011
NWI Times By Keith Benman

Northwest Indiana's five casinos raked in $65.87 million less in 2011 than the year before, a 5.5 percent drop that comes as neighboring states are preparing to significantly increase the competition for Midwest gaming dollars.

The five Northwest Indiana boats had total revenues of $1.13 billion in 2011, as compared to almost $1.2 billion in 2010, according to Indiana Gaming Commission Revenue reports. In 2010, the five Northwest Indiana boats eked out a small gain in revenues.

The drop in Northwest Indiana casino revenues and the flagging fortunes of the state's other casinos mainly are due to the weak economy, said Indiana Gaming Insight Editor Ed Feigenbaum. The same trend has taken hold nationally and is hitting other entertainment choices such as movies.

"People are just reluctant to dig into their wallets for these types of discretionary expenditures," Feigenbaum said.

And when Indiana casinos suffer a string of bad luck, so does the Indiana state budget.

BREAK

Total 2011 revenue at Horseshoe Casino, long the heavyweight of Indiana gaming, dropped $49 million for the year, a decline of almost 8.8 percent. The boat in Hammond raked in $509.5 million in 2011 as compared to $558.51 million in 2010.

who was way off base with their predictions?...

NWI casinos continue to see declining revenues
By Karen Caffarini Post-Tribune

Northwest Indiana casinos in January resumed their trend of year-over-year declining revenues after seeing a slight increase in December.

Of the five casinos, only Blue Chip Casino in Michigan City improved its revenues over January 2010, and it was a very slight hike.

“It’s disappointing after breaking an eight-month string of declines not to be able to increase their business month to month,” Ed Feigenbaum, editor of Indiana Gaming Insight, said Wednesday after the monthly revenue numbers were released by the Indiana Gaming Commission.
