Due to the recent FBI raid of the Lake County Surveyor's offices at the Crown Point government center, Lake County Democratic Party Chairman Thomas McDermott went on WJOB radio this morning (Friday) forcefully advocating an end to the process of democratic elections for offices such as County Surveyor, County Assessor, County Auditor, etc. These positions, he earnestly proclaimed, "SHOULD BE" appointed by a county CEO. (Mcdermott failed to specify if he thought the CEO should be elected. We can only hope)

The Big Mac is concerned that the FBI raid on Surveyor George Van Til's offices will diminish the Democratic Party's prospects from among the pool of independents, potential crossover votes, in addition to tamping down outright voter turnout for this fall's general election. Equally, if not more, was he worried about his own political prospects?

But why proscribe voter participation in the selection of these so-called minor offices, as McDermottt characterized them? (It was difficult to ascertain whether the office, say, of county assessor was minor in light of his political future, or intrinsically insignificant, relatively speaking, simply because it was in charge of assessing real/personal property taxes and annual trending.) For how would a county CEO with little or no experience as a tax assessor, auditor, surveyor or county recorder, provide a superior selection or appointment to these positions than the voters at large?

No. What Mac and other power mongers and wannabee power mongers prefer is to simply rule by fiat, like some third-world dictator or political warlord. Still, can anyone explain this desire to regress, to reduce, the political significance of electorate to the status of feudal vassals or peasant servitude - simply because the Lake County Democratic Party's turnout is at risk?

Why "should" the baby be tossed with the bathwater? When did government of the People, for the People, by the People, fall out of favor with the electorate?

WWPKD?

(What Would Peter Katic Do?)

Can't you just shuddup and Punch 10 already? The Mayor's life would be so much easier.

By the way, did you lose access to your online thesaurus? Maybe break a couple fingers and find typing exceedingly painful? I daresay that in this rare case perhaps 2% of the residents north of 80/94 will be able to understand the point of your post.

A man that backed Janiec, has a good story to tell about being confronted by the Mayor and several of his henchmen that approach him as he passed out handbills for George. He was suprised a Mayor would confront a local resident is such a manner. There was some choice words delivered. If I heard them correctly, I would call them a outright threat. Well you know, it's Lake County.
