Here are the highlights of the meeting:

All board members were present.

There was a public hearing on the SCH budget this evening. This was done first, with the regular board meeting immediately following.

Special Recognition;

Ms. Gail Rodovich(sp), Hammond Education Foundation, and Ms. Terri Mayerick were honored this evening for being nominated for "The Most Influential Women In The Region".

No speakers at either Public Expression Session this evening.

Unfinished Business:

Board policy series 2000 and 5000 were discussed and passed this evening, after much lively discussion. Ms.Murphy voted no, and had questions about the readiness of the proposed items up for the vote.
There will be 4 Athletic Trainers for the high schools. Also, parents of athletes will be signing a concussion/medical form.

Reports:

The new school start times are as follows:
Elementary 9:10am-3:15pm. Middle and high schools 7:30am-2:30pm.

Calender:

The next regular school board meeting will be Monday August 26, 2013 5:30pm 41 Williams Street. Starting in September, the meeting time will be changed back to 6pm, and 1 meeting a month will be at a school.

New Business:

Transfer students will now be accepted into the SCH. They will be charged tuition. A decline in enrollment is cited as the reason for the change.

My Take:

These start times are going to be a disaster. Many older children see their younger siblings off to school in the morning, as the parents go to work early, in some cases. According to Dr. Watkins, there will be supervision for the elementary students who come to school earlier, possibly through the Boys and Girls Club, or by a Teacher. They are working on this. As for the older students, teenagers do not function good in an early morning setting.

Thanks for keeping us informed! I can't imagine that many will take advantage of the transfer tuition. Sad to say

The only person dumb enough to "take advantage" of transfer tuition into Hammond schools would be Sparks.
