Here are the highlights of the meeting:

All board members were present.

Recognition/Presentation:

A presentation was done by the members of the JrROTC from Hammond High. They conducted a very touching memorial in honor of Veterans Day.
A presentation by Mr. Dave Safstrom, the School Safety Specialist, and Officer Vicari HPD, focused on the enforcement of safety laws for pedestrians and bicyclists. A letter will be sent, and phone calls will be made to all parents informing them of this crackdown by the HPD. There will be extra patrols for 2 hours at the beginning and end of the school day.There will be no warnings issued, just citations.

Reports:

A brief overview of the Federal Community Eligibility Option for school systems was given this evening. This government program provides reimbursement to the school districts for student meals. This program is for school districts that have at least 40% or more of students who receive free meals.The SCH will be investigating the impact of this program on other school districts. The school board was informed about this program by a member of the public.

Calender:

Public Work Session on NEOLA Monday November 18, 2013 5:30pm 41 Williams Street.
Regular school board meeting Monday November 25, 2013 6pm Morton Elementary.

Public Expression 2nd Session(no speakers 1st session):

Ms. Janet Workman(sp) told the board members that she would like to bring back the "Relay For Life" back to Gavit.
Mr. Marvin Gibson(sp), a SCH bus driver, says that monitors are very badly needed on the buses. He cited a case of a deaf child on his route who needed extra help.He said it is impossible for the bus drivers to operate the vehicles AND keep an eye on the students.

My Take:

The HHS ROTC were absolutely wonderful !!! This program should be available in all the high schools ! I am glad to see the HPD will be cracking down on these kids who are blocking traffic, and disrespecting citizens. It is more than about time. The bus driver has a valid point. You cannot drive the bus and keep an eye on the students, or assist them. The need for monitors is obvious.
