A fire in Hammond on Sibley in the 600 block Wednesday night has killed three children . Some family members escaped the blaze
Hammond firemen had to brave the low temp,with water freezing every where. Some complain that the firemans' job is a piece of cake.
How would these individuals like to trade places with a firemen fighting a blaze in this frigid cold.

3. As firefighting tactics were conducted and judged for effectiveness:

5 -person companies were 100% effective.

4 -person companies were 65% effective.

3 -person companies were 38% effective. This is where Hammond's Fire Department Staffing is at.

Maybe the tenants were responsible for the NIPSCO, and didn't have the money to pay for it? I guess we will have to wait and see if the furnace just wasn't working, or the tenants couldn't pay the bill.
This is a horrible tragedy, no matter what.

Matt, your welcome to take as many pictures as you choose and post them.

If this property didn't have a working furnace, I am sure McDermott and his hamms would have already paraded out the citations on this building. I am also sure Hammond's crack Code Enforcement Department would have been notified if something was amiss. If it was a problematic unsafe property, we would have known this by now.

I have written a number of times both the HPD and HFD are understaffed. I have posted national research from the premier national fire fighting organization, Hammond Fire Rigs are understaffed.

I lay blame on McDermott Jr, Dave Hamm, the Current fire Chief I think is Smith and the fire fighters union for not forcing the point of 4 persons on a fire fighting rig.

To those of you who believe the HFD is over paid, now I have no real depth in fire fighting, but I challenge any of you to strap on 70 lbs of fire retardant gear, then put a scuba on (another 40 lbs) and walk into a fire to put it out, pulling a charged hose.

In this region, in summer guys can only last 10 to 15 minutes before being rotated out, in the winter it is trying to stay warm and 10 to 15 minutes of being rotated out.

A death by fire is one of the more horrendous methods of dying.

One, Hammond Residents are uninformed, now allowed to make choices when this administration takes some action, both management and the union I am sure could come up with a plan to assure 4 person response to save lives and property.

This family has had no utilities since the spring, when they were shut off for non-payment. It was not the landlords fault. It was a terrible, tragic accident.
