VALPARAISO | Rachel Marvin showed no emotion Monday morning as she made her first court appearance on accusations of driving with drugs in her system and causing the death of one pedestrian while critically injuring another last week.
The 23-year-old LaPorte resident sat in jail garb and shackles as Porter Superior Court Judge Roger Bradford read through the 13 charges filed against her.
Police said Marvin struck the two women, who were out exercising, as she turned at 6:30 a.m. Thursday from southbound Morgan Boulevard on to eastbound Lincolnway in Valparaiso.
The women entered Lincolnway from the east side of Morgan Boulevard and were reportedly thrown a short distance.
While Marvin reportedly had the green light and westbound Lincolnway had a red light, a witness told police Marvin's 2002 Ford Explorer was traveling quickly and did not appear to be turning until the last moment. The pedestrians were easily visible in the roadway, the witness said.
One of those pedestrians, Lindy Wilson, 64, of Chesterton, died later the same day.
The other woman, Beverly Beschinski, 62, of Valparaiso, is reportedly in critical condition at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.
Marvin told police she had consumed some wine the night before the crash, yet blood and urine tests revealed cocaine and opiates in her system as well as a low blood alcohol count, police said.
She is charged with several different counts of driving with drugs in her system, as well as possessing heroin and cocaine.
Marvin was awarded a public defender when she said she did not have the resources to hire a private attorney.
Further hearings were scheduled for Dec. 15 and Jan. 26
Marvin very likely does not have the political connections to have someone mediate thru her incident.
But now, the problem-ed drug dependent nurse, referenced in the earlier post, thru political connects, gets a government job, protected by none other than Thomas McDermott Jr.
Did Tom make sure the individual got a pass with regard to subscription fraud investigation, or driving under the influnece with children in their car, because they could shed light, cause Tom problems with how Hammond spends it money?? Was a threat made?
Tom must be concerned. Tom might still might get a suite @ club fed's vaaaaaacation spot!
