McDermott chose to announce that his choice to headline a "concert" is Common. Recall the name? You may remember that about a year ago he was invited to the White House to perform with some other "entertainers". Common's uncommon background, including his support of radicals and murderers of police officers raised eyebrows in political circles and furrowed the brow of those who protect and serve. Tom has many supporters on the PD. Do they know who they are promoting?

This particular type of entertainment brings nothing but trouble.

Really ... as opposed to other crap music? Rap is pretty popular with younger audiences.

I'm willing to bet that you don't even know who Common is .... let alone anything else.

My son-in-law used to listen to that music. I know what it is. You are the one who doesn't know squat, but you think you do.

So "THAT" music is all the same?

So you still didn't say if you knew who Common was ....or what his music was about.

In addition to being a successful rapper, Common has done very well as an actor. He plays a great role in "Hell on Wheels". I think it's great when someone from Chicago does well in show business.

Common also has shown the ability to make some bad choices while in pursuit of his dreams. Would you join a group of artists to call yourselves "Cocaine 80's"? Who is promoting the show? Who stands to gain or lose from it's success or failure?

Common makes more money in one year than you'll earn in two lifetimes. Pursuing his dreams has worked out pretty well for Common, how are yours working out for you?

Another typical non sequitur response from the resident spell checker. Your conclusions are based on assumptions. I suppose you know Common's finances and mine? Frankly his career is hardly hearty, evinced by his taking a gig at the Hammond Civic Center in February. Staying true to his roots I guess? So who's the promoter? Is Tom McDermott playing promoter with public money?

Common has two Grammys and several gold records in addition to his successful acting career. The tickets for his show at the Hammond Civic center are $50 a seat and you think his appearance here "proves" he isn't successful? The only thing that has been proven is how little you think of Hammond.

Sparks, you seem to think that the $50 general admission price is indicative of something. If tickets are $50, but no one comes, does that still mean he's successful because of the price point? Who is the promoter? Is the talent getting a flat fee, a percentage of the gate, or did Common rent the Civic Center to run his own event? I'm beginning to believe that there is no promoter, just a shameless self promoter and some patronage stooges.

Lubu, did you borrow JCMT's Losermobile for the weekend? What part of two Grammys and gold records don't you understand? As far as who the promoter is, I don't know. For Festival of the Lakes, the city works directly with the agents of the musicians who appear. It would make sense for the city to do the same thing with events at the Civic center. Any profits that result could be used to maintain and upgrade the building.

You know the show is in February right? Wouldn't it be more prudent to wait until then to call it a failure?

Last year Nelly and Soulja Boy were there and from the reports, it sounds like there was a decent turn out. It was also had 3 sponsors in B96 radio, Iconic, and Aquavor (obviously gone now).

Common is Chicago born and has 20 years of following and should do fine.

If not ...call it a failure when it's a failure. The Civic Center has about 40 years of concerts there and it's good that they are utilizing it again.
