A visitor to the campfire began a discussion on the subject, measuring the success of charter schools vs public education .
Someone quickly brought to the table, Thomas McDermott Jr's foray, at wanting to gain control of Hammond's educational funds, pointing to one of McDermott's success, Hammond Academy of Math and Science. The Academy's rating by the State Educational Board has been problematic, ranging between D & F's.
Someone else half joked, maybe that is why Tom wants to leave town, running for Lt. Governor, Governor, US Senate and NIPSY.
Teachers notoriously are under paid, said one of the visitors, pay is tied to attracting quality of teachers. Quality teachers engage kids. Someone else brought up the first principal who left the institution after a few months, who had a stellar reputation as an educator. Speculation on his leave was tied to McDermott's pay to play themes.
The same visitor said they looked at the salaries of teachers at the Academy. Only three individuals made over $50,000 at a school built with out a kitchen and gym. They wondered how the school ever got certified by the state, yet alone built on a site requiring remediation.
Someone asked if they ever caught the guys who stole $250,000 of steel and the trucks on which the steel was stacked. No, answered another visitor. That visitor offered their opinion on the theft, it smells like someone screwed up on the order, the steel's dimensions, rendering the steel useless. Such a blunder could count against the bottom line. The believed, those involved at the time wouldn't want that to surface... so if the stolen steel was stolen, cut up, it loss could be covered by insurance if it was part of a theft.
An interesting theory, but such a thing would never happen in Lake County I offered, per Cal, we're all about Ethics...... just look at Soderquiest. 
Someone asked who were the three making over $50K? The principal was one. Someone else took a guess, it wouldn't be someone benefiting from the lack of a serving kitchen would it? Yep, they said, joking, daddy builds it, a daughter gets a teaching job and forms a company to do the catering. The Lake County Way, some one else said.
Another visitor said, hey it's all about screwing the kids right?
