Here are the highlights of the meeting:

All board members were present.

Recognition/Presentation

Three Hammond High Art students were honored this evening for winning the "Peoples Choice Award in a Lake county Child Abuse Prevention contest.

The "Math Meet" students who won in their grade level were honored this evening.

Hammond High Valedictorian, Miriam Alvarado, was honored this evening for her accomplishments. She came here to the USA 11 years ago, not speaking a word of English.She mastered the English language very quickly, and excelled in school. She has a 4.49 GPA.

Terry Butler, Director Of Transportation for the SCH, was honored as "Support Person Of The Year" for region one, by a statewide organization.

Collette Weitnecht, Lafayette Principal, was honored for her accomplishments in turning Lafayette School around. It was once a failing school, and now is the only Hammond school to get an A from the state.

Consent Agenda

All portions passed this evening, with the exception of section K, which was withdrawn for more information.

Reports

The Times newspaper report on poverty was mentioned this evening as an indicator of the problems some of the SCH students have to deal with on a daily basis.
Curriculum mapping was discussed this evening.

Calender

Public Work Session Wednesday June 11, 2014 5:30pm 41 Williams Street. Regular School Board meeting Monday June 23, 2014 5:30pm 41 Williams Street.

No speakers at either Public Expression sections this evening.

My Take:

Congratulations to all the students honored this evening !

For Lafayette, who has a very high number of students who are at the poverty level or below, this is GREAT NEWS ! Lafayette is the ONLY Hammond public school to receive an A from the state ! ABSOLUTELY you should be giving yourselves a pat on the back ! You are an example of what can be done, when you have dedicated Teachers, and Administrators. You have set the bar very high for the other Hammond public schools to follow. I am so glad my grandson will be going to Lafayette in the Fall ! It IS the BEST school in Hammond !!!
