Geeze, apparently Dave is getting upset regarding someone contesting their property taxes... I guess someone who reduced their property taxes from $900,000 to less than $4,000, as long as it is a McDermott puppet, is ok....

Hammond Water Department head Ed Krusa is quoted in the Times today saying properety owners who disagree with their assessments need to hire appraisers to prove their cases.
Krusa, who was a paid consultant to Hammond Mayor Tom McDermott before getting the Water Department job from him, also is a member of the Lake County Board of Tax Appeals.
Here's the story:

http://www.nwitimes.com/news/local/lake ... a6969.html

Funny Krusa should be quoted. HE owns a strip of land that is near the Hammond Water Department. A couple of years ago the value of that land was lowered dramatically. I was told he did not take part in the vote by the Appeals Board.

I see something strange now, although I understand the Lake County websites are out of date. The records say Krusa paid about $200 in property taxes in February, on land valued at $4,400 right here:

Pretty big difference. So which is it? And did Krusa hire an appraiser? Can he share the name of the appraiser with everyone else?

Property taxes reduced from $900,000 to $4,000. Is it true, you would have to contribute to McDermott's Campaign fund inorder to get that type of reduction?

Proof in the Pudding for reality...instead pudding pud is starting to amp up for the upcoming election.... right pickle pudding?

McDermott Sr who at one time, If memory served me correctly owned North of $100,000 in back taxes.

Property owners have a right to appeal. I have appealed my assessment in the past, and have helped my mother appeal hers. We were both successful.

Your right Tiger,

except here in lake county, it is the responsibility of the elected royalty and their merry men to be supported by the tax payer.

How else do you explain the McDermott style graft?

One point of note on the vid, which is also what I encountered the last time I appealed, was the county worker using data from home sales from a neighborhood in the other end of Hammond, 2-3 MILES from my home. Comparing this section of Hammond with South Hammond is ridiculous. It's comparing apples and oranges. They are both fruit, but they are very different. Fortunately, I had proof with me when I went and appealed, that showed the home sale prices here in my neighborhood, and not in South Hammond. The county will not count foreclosures, short sales, and auction properties, but when most of the home sales fall under that category, they HAVE to use all the data, not just what they decide to pick and choose.
Property owners need to check their county property info cards, also. My mothers house was listed as brick, when it is frame. They had her down for a family room and a fireplace, when it has neither, and so on. They had my house with an addition, and it is the same as it was when it was built in 1920, all original, including the dining room bay window they said was an addition. They had me down as having forced air, which is taxed at a higher amount than radiator heat, and I have the original radiators. They had me down for 2 full baths, totally carpeted, and this list was long and WRONG.

If I remember correctly didn't old man McDermott claim he was appealing his assesed valuation at some point?

Correct bert, and further on, the old man still failed to pay enough property tax or call in yet another favor to have his home removed from a recent tax sale. A tax lien on Sr.'s home was sold for 1.6 mil. It must be nice to live in a 1.6 mill home apparently with no mortgage. I must have missed the story of Sr. winning the lottery.

I’m pleased that there are many new members of our forum and I welcome you. Hammond is one of the more populated cities in Northwest Indiana and plays an important role within the region. Many Hammond residents are very passionate about politics and it is my desire to provide a forum where people can come to freely discuss issues of concern. I welcome and encourage vigorous debate within this forum regardless of ones political views.

Unfortunately the Hammond section of our forum is infected with several members whose sole purpose seems to be to silence anyone whose viewpoints conflict with their own. Their strategy is to personally and relentlessly attack members and to disrupt the normal course of debate and discussion. The Times forum was destroyed by a handful of people whose objective was to silence free speech. I assure you that I will not allow this to occur on this forum.

Although it is my preference to not interfere in discussions, the disruptive behavior of the few is disrupting the forum for the many. This disruptive behavior must be stopped. The offenders will be banned from this forum without further notice. It is my hope that this action will not be required but I suspect that it is inevitable for meaningful change to occur.

Who will be banned?

- Threads whose sole purpose is to attack or harass another member are not permitted. This includes those threads, which pretend to be discussing some harmless topic, but in reality their intent is to harass or threaten another member. Those who start or participate in these threads will be banned and the threads will be deleted.

- Members who relentlessly attack and harass other members.

- Members whose primary purpose is to disrupt the forum.

Pretty simple. Be civil or be gone.
