How do these underpaid, overworked, and unappreciated public servants make ends meet on those salaries in a town whose median family income is just over $42,000?

The sacrifices they must make--with their skill sets I'm certain that in the private sector they could all be making at least three times their municipal salaries. The taxpayers of Hammond are fortunate that these gifted individuals have such a passion for public service

Don't forget the peripheral income and benefits not stated here. Some have more than one check coming from the city. Many on the list have take home vehicles and doubtfully pay for personal use of gasoline. Others rake in "campaign contributions" that will be used to pay for personal expenses like dry cleaning, cell phones, and even the newspaper subscription.

Oh, I realize that their published salaries are only the tip of the iceberg, but gosh, some of these take-home cars are 2009 and 2010 models and we all know how difficult and dangerous it is to drive one's personal car to little league games, parades, and political functions. As for dry cleaning, don't we all want our civic leaders to look their best? Cell phones? They don't just give the iPhone 6 away. We want our civic leaders to be accessible to one another so they can plot to keep padding their salaries and that just can't be done if they cover those stiff bills out of their modest six-figure incomes (right?). Anyway, these guys are a bargain compared to Wall Street bankers, rock stars, and athletes, right? As the trite, tired old line goes, "if I ran the world, teachers, firemen, cops, and political hacks would all be making $1,000,000 per year and the others would be relegated to paltry five- and six-figure paychecks."

Then of course, there are union dues, uniform expenses, health care co-pays (possibly as high as $10 in some cases), and the purchase of tickets to each others' fund raisers--hardships few in cushy private sector employment will ever endure.

If you want the best, you have to be willing to pay them.
