Who's maklin money now?
HT article: E.C. OKs firm that will hire 500 at a salary of $55K

Seems like Mayor Thomas McDermott Jr thumps his chest when he brings $8 hr jobs into hammond or the 4 jobs @ the Potash barn costing hammond $10,000,000.

Seems like the only people making money in Hammond are the McDermotts and a few choosen others.

Did a McDermott make money putting together the land deal for the Oxbow Landing Chicken joint?

Does Sr own a portion of that restaurant? Didn't the city give the project $800,000? Was that the cost of the franchise?

And didn't Sr own land @ the Cabela's complex? & Didn't Munster & Hammond residents behind Cabela's wanted to use some of that land to build an egress road out to Rt 41 in case of flooding? Wasn't this nixed by a very vocal Jr., as this road would have cut thru Sr's land, decreasing its value, as an exit road thru the Cabela's complex would not be as attractive for development?

Hmmmm.... did some one make some heavy cash when Wallmart purchased this land?

And ... is it true Sr hired a contracted service to purchase his Crown Point home at a tax sale, paying only a portion of the back taxes to continue to live in his CP house?

And Hammond is so debt ridden it is the 2nd most debt burdened community in the State. Now, thanks to Mayor Thomas McDermott Jr., Hammond has junk bond status.

Sweeeeeeet!

It is a shame you have to go to another community to make a halfway decent wage. My youngest is working in Merrillville, $10 an hour. Her former job here in Hammond paid $7.50 an hour.

While the company itself may be relocating to East Chicago, it is a pipe dream to think that there are 500 residents in Hammond/Gary/East Chicago/Whiting that are worth $55,000 per year. Sure, there will be one less abandoned structure in EC and perhaps a relatively small number of tax dollars (sure to be squandered) but personnel managers will have to cast a wide net to fill positions that to which current workers won't commute. That is unless the firm is dying to hire ESL types who can't communicate with their supervisors, old-school, bad attitude union types who still think it is 1964, or single mothers who will call off at the drop of a snotty nosed kid or a mood swing which cannot be managed with wine and a handful of mind-altering pills. For the qualified few who can read, write, do simple math, and communicate in English, there are those pesky drug tests.
