The Indiana state legislature is considering reducing the tax burden on Indiana based casinos, and Hammond will be in for a wild ride.... but before we expand on that, wtf is this?

Purdue is going to spend $3,500,000 to purchase the Dowling Park Outdoor Sports complex from Hammond.... buying 15 acres of city owned, no tax payer owned and paid for improvements. http://www.nwitimes.com/news/local/govt-and-politics/purdue-gets-ok-to-purchase-dowling-park-athletic-fields/article_98aa1954-929f-50a5-bf62-4d5f42213bad.html

But in October/November 2014 the Hammond City Council approved a $7,300,000 bond issue, or more correctly, property owners will pay a few dollars more on their tax bills over the next decade to pay for a new athletic complex at Dowling Park that will be used by both Purdue Calumet students and residents.http://www.nwitimes.com/news/local/lake/dowling-park-athletic-complex-on-track-for-next-year/article_7ffb88c2-0387-5e15-ac33-b10e9f8d8ef6.html

The $7.3 million bond issue recently approved by the City Council will primarily be used to pay for constructing fields for baseball, softball and soccer as well as a tennis facility.

Now my math, that is a negative $3,800,000 loss.

Mayor Thomas McDermott Jr has taken Hammond bond rating from AAA to a junk bond rating.... maybe this is why.

The big loss... citizens of hammond are going to loose access and use to this complex... do you think Purdue wants sweatty overweight Hammonites using the complex with their students?

WTF are you thinking Tom?

Or did another friend of Tom make a cool $400,000 on this deal?

I am so disgusted and outraged at this. So, for the 3.8 million dollar loss, the public get to use the facilities when not in use by Purdue, for 20 years? WOW ! The taxpayers of Hammond got screwed big time on this rotten deal. Makes you wonder what else transpired, like in "incentives".
