More than a year ago, Tom McDermott took credit for saving taxpayers millions of dollars. It was in the handling of a mess of his own creation. Tom is alleged to have ran afoul of HUD and fair housing laws and neatly settled a lawsuit for 200 grand in public money. Tom said that was a bargain, as continuing to fight the suit raised the specter of a multimillion dollar award against the city. It also saved him from a public fight that might put him in a light that illuminates him shady. The plaintiff in the lawsuit against McDermott and the city is said to have a recording of interaction between them and McDermott that is central to the case against him and the city he leads. In settling, that recording won't see the light of day, and taxpayers are left in the dark. Did McDermott use 200 grand in taxpayer money to save his personal political future? Have we been duped into paying hush money? |
