Here are the highlights of the meeting:

All board members were present.

Public Hearing On Additional Appropriations:

This was voted on and passed this evening. This is basically a money shuffle from one category to another to pay bills.

Recognition/Presentation:

A presentation was done by Columbia school staff on "The Global Read Aloud Project", which connects students from all over the world who are reading the same books. The different apps and programs to connect the students from various countries are twitter, Google Hang Out(Like Skype), and other apps. The students from the connected schools discuss the book they are reading, and learn about the countries the other students reside in.

Unfinished Business:

An update was given tonight on the previous request for scholarship information for Hammond students who attended a scholarship fair at the Genesis Center. Hundreds of thousands in scholarships were offered/awarded to Hammond students who attended this event, including at least 2-3 full scholarships.

Consent Agenda:

The personal report on the consent agenda was amended this evening to exclude the janitorial staff changes until questions by the school board members are answered.

Reports:

There are 2 interim Deans placed at 2 Hammond schools. Dan Cummings is the new interim Dean at Morton, and Adam White is the new interim Dean at Hammond High School.

Calendar:

The next regular school board meeting will be on Monday November 16th, 6pm Edison Elementary School.

Public Expression 2nd Session(no speakers 1st session)

1. A parent expressed her concern about kids going back and forth to school, who are hopping or crawling over stalled/stopped trains.
2. A Gavit parent expressed her outrage over a loaded gun incident at the school, and the reported failure of school officials to immediately notify the parents of the students.

My Take:

I found the reading program connecting students worldwide to be very interesting. I hope this opportunity is open to all the SCH schools.
As for kids hopping, or crawling under stopped trains, this is a real tragedy waiting to happen.
As for the loaded gun brought to school, all the security in the world is not going to stop a fool who is determined. We live in a crazy world, and we need to teach our children to be vigilant at all times.
