Hammond sanitary district users and taxpayers lose again. The Indiana Supreme Court handed another loss to Tom McDermott. I wish he would pay for his own mistakes. At McDermott's urging, the sanitary district illegally cancelled sewer contracts with neighbors. Apparently not able to understand the explicit "see spot run" language in the contracts that calls for arbitration to settle disputes, the sanitary district struck out three times in court. Who represented the district and got paid legal fees? A Friend of Tom? The empty hand held by the city probably emptied the legal services budget of the sanitary district. Who's pockets were filled? Now McDermott says they'll go to arbitration to settle?! That should have been step one. Maybe Tom considers benefiting friends and family before doing anything else?

Lu....

You're on target again! McDermott, a Notre Dame Law School Graduate, of course knew he would not prevail, despite the clear contract verbiage requiring arbitration.

Who represented the district & got paid legal fees? Was this group a contributor to someone's political campaign? Did a family member get some perks, legal work out of it? Someone's got to pay for that new $60,000 vehicle found in the McDermott stable, or is it coming out of the campaign fund?

And speaking of Tom paying for his in-discretion, Tom should cut a $200,000 check to the Hammond public housing fund, repaying Hammond residents for his discriminatory statements, in which HUD mandated a fine. Those discriminatory statements, disclosed in open court would have cost Tom his law license.

City of Whiting mayor Joseph Stahura said at a recent public meeting that Whiting, as a sanitary district customer community, has so far spent 750 thousand defending their contractual rights in this fiasco. Unknown is what costs Highland and Griffith have incurred. Add to that what Hammond has paid, and you're probably in the ballpark of a couple million dollars of needlessly spent public dollars. Tom McDermott hit it out of the ballpark for the attorneys "earning" those fees, and not a dime of that money will help prevent sewer overflows nor will the Grand Calumet be any cleaner. Good job Tom! Said the pigs at the trough.
