Here are the highlights of the meeting:

All board members were present.

Recognition/Presentation:

A presentation was given tonight on the Clark Middle/High School AML Program, and the Purdue Program. Special Education Students are given an opportunity to participate in STEM and PLTW, to gain technical skills for future employment through the AML. The Purdue Program is aviation based, and Aviation and Avionics will be on the curriculum for this program.

A Hammond High student will be one of the torchbearers for the Bi-Centennial Torch Relay in Indianapolis.

Reports:

As part of the safety and security training recommended by the government, the Hammond middle and high schools will have "Active Shooter Training Drills". This will be done at a set date(s) after parents and the media are informed. For right now, they will not be done in the elementary schools, but they could be included in drills in the future.

Calendar:

The next regular school board meeting will be on Monday October 17th, 6pm, 41 Williams Street.

Public Expression 2nd Session(no speakers 1st session)

Carlotta King remarked about Glenda Ritz, the State School Superintendent, coming to the Education Matters Forum at Hammond High last week. She also said that the Area Career Center, which has a variety of educational programs, is not being publicized enough.

Several students from the Early College at the Area Career Center, spoke about a separate graduation ceremony for the graduating students, separate from their home schools.

My take:

Congrats to Clark for being the lead in educational opportunities for the students !!! Congrats also to the HHS student honored as a torchbearer !!!

I do not like the idea of an active shooter drill in the schools, when students are present. I do believe safety issues need to be discussed with all students, but what this "drill" will entail will needlessly terrify many students, in particular the younger children, and those with special needs. IMO, the drills need to be done outside of school hours, with volunteers in a supporting role, NOT students as guinea pigs for police training. Train the children separately, without the police guns and dogs.
IMO, the school security in Hammond is good. The doors are kept locked, and visitors do not have easy access.
