The council also confirmed the appointment of Carrie Hutton as a commissioner on the Hammond Human Relations Commission.

“I think she would be an asset,” Mayor Thomas McDermott Jr. said. “She’s an excellent person."

Hmmm is this the same Carrie Huttion who is the daughter of the architect who built the Hammond Academy of Math & Science, the School built with out a gym and serving kitchen? Built on a brown field needing remediation?

The very same Carrie Huttion, who got a $50,000 a year teaching job at the Charter School, when the vast majority of teachers are paid less the $30,000 a year?

The very same Carrie Huttion, who by such serendipitous circumstance, had the blind luck, the insight to form a catering corporation and won the catering contract, serving, catered meals the Hammond Academy of Math & Science, which was built with out a serving kitchen?

And is it true, Carrie Huttion is the president of a company which reportedly prepared the Charter School meals, the meals prepared at the Downtown Hammond Federal Court House kitchen?

And is it true, someone this close to Hutton ".." got a rent free contract with the Downtown Hammond Federal Court House to serve lunch at the Federal Court House for its guest?

And is it true, this company uses the Federal Court House kitchen to prep catered meals, which are shipped over to the Charter School, the very School build and designed by her father with out a serving kitchen?

As I have written before, it is the duty of every single Hammond and Lake County resident, all have a moral obligation to assure that Hammond's Mayor Thomas McDermott Jr's friends and family (HMTMJF&F) have ample business opportunities, and are taken care of by Hammond and Lake County taxpayers.

WE, you and I have an obligation to assure the average Hammond citizen making $35,000 a year, the hard working Hammond residents, who must enter a lottery to assure their kids are taught by school staff who barley are etching out a living, but friends of Tom get appointed to boards and make $50,000 a year as teachers because a family member built a school with out a serving kitchen and a HMTMJF&F assures Tom's friends have an ample salary, as Ms. Hutton, and assure they have the insight to be lucky enough to provide minimum wage jobs to Hammond residents assuring these HMTMJF&F become wealthy at the expense of the taxpayers?

And Didn't Mr Hutton contribute generously, to the tune of some where north of $5,000 to McDermott's campaign?

Naw, it couldn't be the same Carrie Huttion.

I'm sure as Tom said: “I think she would be an asset,” “She’s an excellent person."

And I would guess the federally underwritten free kitchen gives a company a bit of a step up above the other competition to be more competitive.

Is there a conflict of interest here somewhere? Cal, you out there? Mr Capp? Cal? Mr. Capp. Come on now really?

I wonder if Human Rights includes fair, equitable and equal pay for teachers in a Charter School?

Speaking of the charter school, I see that Carrie Hutton, a teacher at the charter school, who's family, Hutton & Hutton, were the architects for the charter school, who's husband's business does the catering for the charter school, has been appointed to the position of Commissioner to the Hammond Human Relations Commission. nwitimes.com
The friends and family plan continues.

Found this article in the Chicago Sun Times.....

I wonder how many people who have been bribing Tom would be subject to this? 30 Hours of community service.

I think Tom would/could lay off have the city employee's.

Man sentenced to probation for trying to bribe lawyer

BY RUMMANA HUSSAIN Criminal Courts Reporter May 28, 2014 1:32PM

A North Side man was sentenced to 24 months probation Wednesday for trying to bribe prominent defense attorney Sam Adam Jr.

Cook County Judge William Lacy also ordered Eric Hays to perform 30 hours of community service after he pleaded guilty to bribery for offering to refuse to testify against a client of Adam’s in exchange for $5,000.

Hays, 44, of the 2300 block of West Farragut, had made the offer in calls he made to Adam in August 2011, Assistant State’s Attorney Adam Zebelian said.

“Justice has been served,” Adam said following Wednesday’s hearing.

Adam has represented former Gov. Rod Blagojevich and singer R. Kelly.

Hays refused comment.

Thomas McDermott Jr. might run for governor. This is one registered voter who won't vote for him. He is a political "boss" in Hammond who answers to nobody.

When asked why a former fire superintendent was hired as an unnecessary consultant, his response was, "Because I can." When a councilman asked for financial information concerning Festival of the Lakes, the councilman was stonewalled by other council members with allegiances to the mayor.

Councilwoman Janet Venecz voted against supplying the information because "the festival has been around for 10 years and nobody has bothered to inquire about the money spent on the festival for 10 years." What? Can Hammond afford a losing event year after year? Somebody is making money on the event. Who is it?

What exactly is going on in Hammond today?

At what point will Mayor Thomas McDermott Jr. get off his duff and get some new business into Hammond? Not another pawn shop drawing trash to the community to sell that which they stole from us the night before.

Road work so ill-planned and slow that it is killing the businesses we do have and nothing is coming into Hammond.

Hammond is a good city with good people, but it seems only to draw pawn shop after pawn shop. It almost seems as if McDermott does not even live in the Hammond community! What exactly is going on here?

- Monica DeLorenzo, Hammond

It has been widely reported, McDermott does not live in Hammond anymore. Reports have surfaced McDermott's Nickerbocker residence is vacant.

Mayor's Statement on Housing Choice Voucher

HAMMOND | Mayor Thomas McDermott Jr. said in a mandated statement Monday the Hammond Housing Authority will continue to help families through the Housing Choice Voucher Program.

The statement was part of an agreement to settle a March 2012 discrimination complaint filed by ousted Hammond Housing Authority Director Maria Becerra.

In that settlement, the city and the HHA reached an agreement with Becerra, HHA's executive director for 27 years, and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development for $200,000.

Becerra claimed her employment contract was not renewed because of her work providing minority families with rent-subsidy vouchers to move into neighborhoods they otherwise couldn't afford.

McDermott said he was concerned about her residency in Highland outside city limits, her high salary as director, and a legal misstep made during contract negotiations with her.

McDermott told The Times in February he agreed to settle rather than drag the city through a potentially expensive legal battle.

The city and HHA claimed no wrongdoing in their settlement with Becerra, who filed a federal complaint after she was let go by the authority.

According to the settlement, McDermott was required to read a prepared statement at a Hammond Housing Authority public meeting in support of housing choice, more specifically the Housing Choice Voucher program.

In his statement, McDermott expressed his support for current HHA Director Carmen Paniagua, and the direction of the authority since she took over in March 2012.

He acknowledged a challenging transition between the two directors, but he said not renewing Becerra's contract was the right decision.

"My intent is and always has been to support HHA in its mission to provide assistance to responsible citizens who need help finding clean, safe and affordable housing," he said. "HHA and the Housing Choice Voucher program play an important role in helping people get back on their feet."

McDermott said he heard complaints from residents the vouchers were used by criminals and slum lords, and that he decided to take a stand.

"As your mayor, I will never tolerate any program that allows slum lords, gang bangers and criminals to operate in our neighborhoods," McDermott said. "Each time a drug dealer or gang banger got a housing choice voucher, a family who truly needed and deserved assistance was denied."

The mayor said he didn't appreciate being required to say anything.

"This was a deal-breaker," McDermott said after the meeting. "If I didn't do it, they wouldn't settle the case. But nobody likes it when someone tells you what you have to say."

Becerra's attorney, Michael Allen, was unable to respond immediately for comment but planned to issue a statement in the future.

“If we directly attach him to it, we can make that assumption,” he said, adding that Vann’s statements lead authorities to believe there are “possible other victims.” Some cases may date back 20 years, based on what Vann has told police, the chief said.

HPD did an outstanding job in coming to quickly arrest this self admitted serial killer, but has McDermott sullied this great police work?

Vann reportedly has disclosed he has a 20 year history of leaving bodies strewn across the country, Today when authorities were asked about turning the case over to the FBI, as there most likely victims strewn across the country, does Tom wanted to make a deal?

Is the deal to withhold turning the case over to federal authorities if they leave him alone....?

There have been so many incidents in the last week, where Hammond's honorable Mayor Thomas McDermott Jr has put his foot in his mouth....

McDermott, Thomas J got punked by Chuck Goudy of Chanel 7 eye witness news.

On a Chicago Radio Show, Goudy, a very well respected Chicago investigative reporter was talking about the Vann case. Vann a Gary Native who is making some admissions regarding his involvement with at least one, and possibly more murders, stated after Notre Dame Law Graduate, Thomas McDermott Jr made another, out of his ass statement, one murder wouldn't be cause for the Death Penalty, but several would reclassify the case as a death penalty case (para phrasing of course)... Goudy said he just didn't know where McDermott came up with that, as he has no say in the matter.

McDermott's statements are as valuable as any other beer drinking, big gutted moron.

McDermott has enough on his plate with failing to address the police brutality case against a couple of hammond cops. McDermott could have neutralized the fall out, by getting ahead of the issue, but it seems now all over town cases are surfacing about police brutality.

A couple of hundred plus, standing room only people met @ the Ophelia Center last week. From people visiting the campfire, two of McDermott's white representatives were present, taking mental notes.

Tom has got some problems... this just paints McDermott into the corner of becoming more unattractive as a state wide candidate, and even less attractive as a lobbyist, or representative on a federal level.

Tom keep up the good work.

By John Dodge

CHICAGO (CBS) — Hammond Mayor Thomas McDermott Jr. just doesn’t get it.

A suspected serial killer by the name of Darren Deon Vann this past weekend led police investigators to the bodies of six women in Gary, after Hammond police arrested Vann in connection with another murder at the Motel 6 in Hammond.

Seven women–and perhaps many more–are dead.

And, McDermott makes Monday’s news conference about himself and his fine police officers.

Here was a tweet posted on his Twitter account on Sunday:

Hammond PD solves motel murder, nabs serial killer from Gary in process– will be a nation-wide story, stay tuned http://t.co/F25IV3mPBF

— Thomas McDermott (@tommcdermottjr) October 19, 2014

On Monday, he took advantage of that “national story” opportunity to tout his police department, which is also the subject of a lawsuit over the arrest of a passenger during a routine traffic stop. And there’s another lawsuit over shooting a dog.

“Yesterday, a murder case broke that is now national.” McDermott said. “Hammond and Northwest Indiana are safer today because of the work of the Hammond police department. Congrats on a job well-done.”

There is no question that the officers did a fine job. And the merits of those lawsuits will have to be settled by the courts.

However, seven people are dead, Mr. McDermott.

There is more: The mayor of Hammond then fired a shot at Gary, implying that the crimes wouldn’t have happened if that city didn’t have so many abandoned buildings.

“I want to remind Hammond residents that here we board them up,” he said.

Seven people are dead, Mr. McDermott.

That part of the story was mentioned as a afterthought in McDermott’s self-serving remarks, when he spent about five seconds saying his “thoughts and prayers” are with the families of the victims.

Seven people are dead, Mr. McDermott.

And there could be many more.

The public finally got that detail when Mayor McGrandster allowed his Police Chief John Doughty to say the killings could go back as far as 20 years.

But wait, there’s even more.

Mr. McDermott, on Twitter, also congratulated the NWI Gazette, a citizen journalist blog written by Ken Davidson, with breaking the story before the traditional media.

That’s great for Mr. Davidson.

But that’s not the story here, either.

Checking the NWI Gazette Facebook page around lunchtime on Monday, one would find the picture of the inside of a room, purportedly at the Motel 6.

The Gazette inaccurately said it was the room where Vann was caught, indicating that there was a struggle.

At Monday’s news conference, Doughty said Vann, who on Monday was charged with the Hammond killing, was arrested in Gary without incident.

However, the problem isn’t the veracity of the information. We all make mistakes or get bad information from sources.

The problem is the picture itself.

It shows a bare-bones hotel room with the position of the beds indicating a possible struggle.

The Facebook caption says the telephone and lamp have been removed, presumably from the night stand. Although it would be impossible to know where the phone and lamp were originally located, unless somebody told the Gazette that information, Mr. Davidson saw that evidence being removed, or that part is wrong, too.

The real question is: What are we seeing and where did it come from?

Is it a photo of the room at the Motel 6 where Afrikka Hardy was murdered? The image is consistent with details described in the investigating officer’s affidavit, which describes the beds being “moved away from the headboards to suggest there was possibly a struggle there.” Hardy’s body was found in the bathtub, according to the affidavit.

Was it a photo taken by investigators at the scene? Or was Davidson allowed access to the room to take the picture?

If so, then somebody either leaked a crime scene photo, which is a really, really bad idea — the image was published before Vann was even charged.

Or Davidson somehow got close to the crime scene, which would also not be a good idea, raising the possibility of evidence contamination.

There are other photos on the Facebook page that appear to show the exterior of the Motel 6 room, taken on the outside, farther away.

I have emailed Mr. Davidson for a response.

The possible contamination of the scene could damage the trial. As for the mayor, GEEZ, I would be exuding sympathy to the families, and certainly would not have been dissing Gary.

I'm glad that someone outside of Hammond can see McDermott for the unbecoming narcissist he is. Anyone from Hammond speaking this truth will have their motivations questioned. Whatever you say about Tom McDermott, if it is not praiseful, it is denounced as a political attack and "hater" speech. John Dodge has no ambitions to run for mayor of Hammond, nor does he have a political ax to grind here, but he sees that like a kid in a candy shop, Tom McDermott's eyes light up and his excitement overt, over the thought of national exposure, even in a humiliating story like the excessive force lawsuit, or the sad deaths of victims of a serial killer. Tom McDermott's ego and narcissism are impossible to ignore.

Lubu & Tiger,

Besides John Dodge, Chuck Goudy an well respected Channel 7 investigative reporter, also lambasted, while on a radio show, with a several hundred thousand listeners. McDermott statement was about the Vann murders.... McDermott a Notre Dame law school graduate was pounding his chest on this would be a capital murder case, talking as if he has control of the Bernie Carter's Office. Carter is the Lake County Prosecutor.

BTW, John Dodge has some North West Indiana affiliations, Dodge is a graduate of Purdue College of Liberal Arts, &
Brian Lamb School of Communication at Purdue University

And now David Rutter a long time journalist and news paper editor takes a swipe @ the Honorable Mayor Thomas McDermott Jr.

Apparently McDermott doesn't have the slightest idea how much of a moron he really is, and apparently the people around him don't have enough courage to tell this man how well he is sealing his future.

Thomas McDermott Jr's political and career future outside of opening his own law firm, is nill, as his public comments seem to be putting more nails in his coffin. No respectable law firm/lobbyist group would consider this guy for any position above a janitor because of his mouth.

Now Tom McDermott Jr is drawing attention from outside the region. Attention he can't control.

I've written both Dodge & Rutter to do a follow up article on a couple of things here in Tom's Hammond, just to expand on how problematic McDermott's administration is with regard to racism.

Rutter: For Hammond’s mayor, it’s all about him

We stand stunned and dazed by the horror of mass murder in Northwest Indiana, but it’s not all bad news.

Sure, seven women were brutally murdered, but there’s no use fixating on human degradation. Look at the bright side.

Hammond Mayor Tom McDermott does.

Of course, if you are Gary’s mayor trying to find a way through the evil maze, enduring McDermott’s civic taunts and cheerleading — my town’s better than your town — does not seem so charming.

But, hey, don’t be a party pooper. You just have to appreciate the happier political benefits of serial murder.

So while a normal person would offer solace to grieving families and calm to a shocked community, McDermott was taking credit for his crack police force solving the crime. It’s as if he’d found the cure to Ebola.

He was victory-lapping around his Twitter and Facebook accounts last weekend. Two bits, four bits, six bits, a dollar. All for Hammond, stand up and holler. It has a ring to it, don’t you think?

McDermott’s Twitter account was ablaze with breathless revelations and admiration.

“Hammond PD solves motel murder, nabs serial killer from Gary in process — will be a nationwide story, stay tuned,” said the mayor.

On two Facebook posts, McDermott praised the Hammond police investigation, making sure to stand close to the boys in blue to get the maximum PR effect.

This was especially useful on the heels of a lawsuit against the department claiming several officers whupped and falsely a man during a routine traffic stop.

McDermott has used his personal Facebook page to cheer for his police department.

“As you hear the details of this grisly murder in a Hammond motel room and discover how this murder was solved by our police, it will make you proud of the Hammond PD,” McDermott wrote. “... Hammond, and NWI, are safer today because this murder case was solved.”

And, then, oh by the way, “Our condolences and prayers go out to the victims and to the families of the victims.”

Of course, Northwest Indiana was not safer the day before Afrika Hardy’s body was found in that motel room. Darren D. Vann was just another ex-con sexual predator that police generally ignore.

Nothing in the discovery of Vann’s evil deserves civic crowing.

Of course, for anyone who wants to make political coinage while standing over the corpses of seven dead women, the preference for measured, subdued leadership won’t appeal much. Two bits, four bits, etc.

McDermott also made sure everyone knew all but one of the bodies were dumped in Gary rather than Hammond. And that Gary has 10,000 abandoned buildings while Hammond is the Golden City on the Hill. Good point, Your Honor.

But let us take a divergent approach. Though we appreciate the cheering, this crime was solved for two pedestrian reasons, neither of them involving a Hercule Poirot revelation.

The de facto Internet escort service that “facilitated” the most recent tryst for Vann kept good phone records. Or at least, he left a fat electronic footprint on file with them. Worried about her, Hardy’s friends, not police, found her body. They served up Vann to police.

And second, Vann talked so freely about his apparent murder spree, including giving Hammond police the locations of the other six bodies, that the cops barely had time to scribble down the incriminating notes.

This was not sleuthing genius.

No police force cared who Vann was or knew what he was doing, and no one with a badge in Northwest Indiana protected anyone from anything.

They lucked out in catching Vann. Luck is good. But luck is an accident.

No one was watching out for the seven women Vann is accused of killing during the 13 months since his release from a Texas prison on another sex assault. They died in the shadows. No one cheered for them.

Except for one, the victims were young and black and all apparently were part of the casual sex trade. They were invisible humans, just as were the three teenage boys David Maust murdered in Hammond the same year McDermott was first elected mayor.

As for politicians with a taste for facile self-admiration, invisible victims are handy tools, even if they’re dead.

Now they are just seven props to decorate the stage. To a hammer, everything looks like a nail.
