Maybe you should take a ride through a neighborhood in Gary. There is no comparison.

As a city official, then your saying it is acceptable.

There are a number of examples of public corruption in Hammond, a number. One such example: http://www.northwestindiana.com/discussionforum/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=10556&start=645&sid=1c9033f63a04b17873c4778eae9dbaff

When the city condones spending nearly $70,000 rehabbing a building, and you can't sell the property after rehab, it won't meet FHA financing standards, when the rehab used federal, HUD money, and then HUD bars the city from future participation because of its spending practices the city has a problem.

When contractors refuse to do business in Hammond because bidding on a project, a favored contractor gets to amend their contract, while an unfavored contractor gets stuck with project cost over runs establishes an unfair process and what appears to encourage what some might call payoffs which benefit political campaign funds, it is Gary, thanks to criminal corruption. It points to one person and his co conspirators.

So you think the signs as you enter Hammond should say

Hammond - We're not as bad as Gary
Mayor Thomas M McDermott Jr

You should get to work on making that change.

I am in my 60's, probably a bit older than you. I used to be in Gary frequently with my late Dad, when I was a small child, up until my middle teens. My Dad owned a business, and he had accounts in all sections of Gary, and in northwest Indiana in general. I remember what Gary used to look like. I remember their bustling downtown, as my Dad used to take my mother shopping there, besides shopping in downtown Hammond. I remember when it started going downhill, the exodus, and the corrupt leadership that took over. I remember when the houses started to be abandoned, and the city services being almost non-existent. My Dad was robbed twice when he went to Gary. He started carrying a gun. It got to be too much. His accounts even had security guards escort my Dad in and out of the businesses of his clients. He dropped all of his Gary accounts, one by one. The last holdout was Glen Park and Miller. He let them go too. His life was not worth the risk.
I saw the decline of Gary with my own eyes, and Hammond is heading the same way.

Bert it's clear from your posts you aren't proud of Hammond.Every post you make is focused on your complaints about taxes, crime or your personal vendetta against the Mayor or Steve Fowler. The city has undergone an amazing transformation that haters like you refuse to acknowledge. Schools have been rebuilt, roads resurfaced, bike paths created and millions have been invested in the Wolf Lake pavilion.Hammond now has the best youth baseball facilities in the state along with an outstanding golf course and clubhouse. Neighborhoods are being revitalized by Code Enforcement by forcing owners of illegal cut-ups to fix up their properties or have them bulldozed. Property values are rising and your neighbors are upgrading their homes. College Bound is educating the next generation of Hammond residents. While it's true that you, chuck and Mary Ellen are in a rut, Hammond is on the rebound.

Amazing transformation? What kind of drugs are you smoking?????????? Hammond's growth continues to trail even the anemic results of the rest of NW Indiana.

Schools rebuilt? It's already been 10 years since the vast majority of those schools were rebuilt. The Mayor can take no credit since he has done nothing to bash the SCH (rightfully so). Road resurfacing has slowed massively under McDermott Jr as casino money has been diverted to other "pet projects". The Wolf Lake investment has been a horrible infrastructure investment from an ROI perspective. Best youth baseball facilities in the state? There has been tons of investment but there are other great facilities in the state that draw tournaments far more regularly than Hammond. Outstanding Golf Course? Please show me where that investment is breaking even.

Property values rising? From when? From when they fell off a cliff in 2007 like every other area? Hammond showed a very minimal gain during the "boom" times compared to other locations, yet saw a substantial hit during the financial crisis. Property tax valuations are still down about 10% from their peak.

Hammond still has an income and educational demographic problem. A huge one, that will continue to cause it to slide further unless it is dealt with. Hammond has made no efforts to fix those problems in the 10 years that McDermott has been in office (or the previous 20 years before it.)

Matt your post is on target!

I just wanted to add a bit here, under Mayor Thoams McDermott Jr's infamous qoutes regarding today's Election Board hearing.

For those who might read this post, after Tom is in jail, the history is Erick Kreig levied charges against McDermott regarding campaign finance irregularities.

Mayor Thomas McDermott Jr, a soon to be felon, may have tripped over himself today. A politically weighted board, in his favor, reportedly by part lines voted not to investigate Mr. Kreigs allegations. The following is from another post.....

Neometric wrote:
Krieg has a serious credibility problem. But, since that doesnt mean too much to fed prosecutors, it is a good bet Krieg has already supplied this info. So why hasnt Benson and company moved on it?

Neo,

This is the very same election board who voted George Janiec off the ballot when he was running for Mayor against Thomas McDermott Jr. If you remember correctly, the Indiana State Supreme Court, convened, reversing their action and remanded the case remain open until they received a report re instating Janiec back on the ballot, all in 3 days. The speed at which the SSC acted was break neck speed I am sure you would agree, the speed at which they acted was unprecedented, primarily due to the corrupt actions by this very same Lake County Election Board. It reflects the very same Election Board who then, was packed with Tom's people then, as it is now, packed with McDermott's people ruling in this case.

So, Neo, I dont think your totally correct here. I heard from a 3rd party video of the Election Board Fiasco is coming.

From what I heard, McDermott has some substantial problems with his campaign spending and da rent. Once the video is released, it might shed a different light on this matter.

It is going to take an in depth forensic audit to provide a substantive answer on Tom's friend Woerpel receiving $6,000 in cash. I heard rumor a letter was being being drafted to the US Postmaster Inspector General on the subject. The Hatch Act, and what many believe to be associated corruption, very well may undo Mr. Woerpel. Maybe this is why da mailman has been so quite as of lately. It very well may move Mr. Woerpel into retirement.

And knowing my good dear friend Tom, as I do, he is a thief and I believe his finger prints are all over the $6,000. The problem is will he be a stand up guy or is he going to play dumb and have the Mrs. take the fall? How much of a role does she have cutting the checks? 8)

As to the payments to Kelly Consulting..... well, from what I heard, Mr. Mayor very well may have some explaining to do to someone else. Let's listen to Tom's Friday AM show and hope this dip s*** pounds on his chest pissing off some of those people who he knows listen to his show.

As to the single $1,000 payment to Kaplan for rent, well, Tom may have gotten very, very, very sloppy with his money. I was told McDermott's appointments voted straight party line. They should have recused themselves.

Wait for da video...

Tommie has got some problems... and the board covered for him. Wait. Let's see if we can help Tom.

Well Spunky, you took such a thorough cockslapping from Mr. Mattlap that I can't add a thing.

You're a Hammond insider--one of the worst things that can happen to the few remaining decent citizens in that craphole--but you post wildly exaggerated commercial property values and you can't even back them up. You'd think you'd have a vague idea about their true worth but like most of NWI's leadership you assume that people who live in the civilized world are as stupid as those in Da' Region. It just isn't true.

How many people do you know that moved to Crown Point because of that stupid Bo Jackson sports complex?

College Bound is educating the next generation of Hammond residents? 95% of your high school graduates are basically draught animals. How many of College Bound's "success stories" majored in a field other than communications, education, child development, or African-American history?

No moderately successful person would ever consider moving to a place in which people like The Oracle, Xmpt, and Sparks--hacks who wear their lack of accomplishment and education on their sleeves--make decisions which have significant impact on their finances and futures.

You truly do live in an alternate universe, but that's the price you pay to keep your patronage job.

Tourism agency to begin negotiations with Fair Oaks for air show

Jonathan Miano, The Times

Hammond Mayor Thomas McDermott Jr. voices his opposition to the South Shore Air Show moving from Miller Beach to Fair Oaks Farms during public comments at the South Shore Convention and Visitors Authority Board meeting at the SSCVA offices in Hammond.

Mayor, South Shore CVA at odds over Air Show's move

HAMMOND | The South Shore Convention and Visitors Authority Board of Directors voted to begin negotiations on a contract with Fair Oaks Farms for the 2014 South Shore Air Show.

The 13-4 vote is another step in having the South Shore Air Show move from its former home at Gary’s Miller Beach to the attraction in Newton County 40 miles to the south.

“We’re going to go down to Fair Oaks and try to hammer this out as best we can and put something in a contract form and bring it back to the board,” said South Shore Convention and Visitors Authority President Speros Batistatos.

Hammond Mayor Thomas McDermott Jr. attending the meeting to voice his displeasure at moving the air show at a current budgeted amount of $380,000 out of Lake County.

“We’re using taxpayer funded money to fund a private business,” McDermott said. “One of the things Speros says a lot is ‘putting heads in beds.’ This is not going to put a single head in a single bed in Lake County. I think it’s wrong. It’s galvanized a lot of people. It’s outrageous in my opinion. It should be held in Gary.”

Batistatos said McDermott has great passion for what he believes is good for Hammond but that “our products are wildly different.”

“The way you run a city is much different than the way a convention and visitors authority are run,” he said.

Batistatos said at Fair Oaks both the cow and pig adventures are nonprofit organizations.

“That’s not being talked about,” he said. “Part of the reason the board authorized us today to go down and negotiate is to bring back some more concrete answers and unfortunately and what I regret this has been media fodder. This has been a business decision by an organization that seeks to maximize the money that it has to spend in every one of the communities.”

McDermott said the board’s decision was not unexpected.

“Speros has pretty good control of his board,” he said. “I think it’s a done deal. But they still can’t answer the question on how much a private business is going to make using Lake County taxpayers money.”

Board members Christine Cash, Christopher Jones, John Kiernan and Darnail Lyles voted against beginning contract negations with Fair Oaks.

Several local officials and residents joined McDermott in voicing their displeasure at the move, including Lake County Councilman David Hamm, D-Hammond, who said the funds to move the air show should be spent inside Lake County limits.

LaVetta Sparks-Wade, of Gary, brought attention to the fact that the event used to be called the Gary Air Show before it change of name to South Shore.

“I would hate to see the largest event that goes on in the city of Gary leave,” she said.

Jocelyn Prue, of Hammond, said as a business person she invests money herself in Hammond and Lake County and would appreciate “that any funds we have to keep them here locally.”

Nancy Frigo, of Schererville, is a Realtor and is all for moving the air show and the cross-marketing it will develop.

“I think what you guys are doing partnering up with one of the biggest attractions we have in the south part of our territory is phenomenal,” she said.

The director of the air show, Rudy Malnati, who also directs the Chicago air show, spoke at the meeting on why Hammond would not be a suitable location to move the event because of issues with air space involving Midway Airport.

“In order to bring a first-class air show to Hammond we would not be able to bring any tactical demos, no (U.S. Air Force) Thunderbirds,” he said.

Malnati said an air show affects “people on the ground, too” and that in Hammond’s case, Horseshoe Casino would have to be closed during an air show.

Batistatos stated earlier this month that continuing the air show in Gary “is not a sustainable business model.”

What the hell is this guy preaching?

Just not more than a few months ago, Tom McDermott Jr gave $400,000 to a private construction company, $400,000 cash to build 2 homes in Hammond.

The company principals are reportedly related to a good friend of McDermott Jr. $400,000 of Hammond tax dollars went to some one out of south county. Not a Hammond guy. Hell, I would rather have Taylor made Rite get $400,000 to build two homes in Hammond, at least he is a Hammond contractor, but first he would have to deal with the Indiana Secretary of State record of being "administratively closed."

WTF, McDermott is so blatant in his corruption, just look at what happened to a Hammond Hispanic woman who didn't choose the right contractor.

It is just unbelievable http://www.northwestindiana.com/discussionforum/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=11488&sid=2529b53ab1348c0108e57606bb1318c6

Speaking of how much is going to private business, Isn't McDermott Jr quoted that he wouldn't reveal private contributions to the Festival of the Snakes? You bet he said that!

And speaking of the Snake Festival, Hammond Mayor and Lake County Democratic Chairman has failed to address the $250,000 shortage in parking fees over the last six or seven years.

Even when State Auditors requested the Controller's Office maintain parking receipts, McDermott's people made sure they threw them away.

McDermott on the radio today said his "sole purpose is to avoid future embarrassment." Anyone want to give him advice on how to advance his resolve?

He can make a small start by insuring that all those hired for relatively visible positions of responsibility can read and write at at least a fourth-grade level.

Any thoughts on why the article from The Post Tribune website which was explaining the FBI visit to the surveyors office has been removed? P.S. To view said article, google FBI asking questions.

Thank you for pointing out the article. On the radio, McDermott gave us self-serving speculation that the interviewee was the target. Another commenter thought out loud the question of why Garcia rolled over so quickly. They mentioned a quid pro quo scenario where future business from the surveyor's office would be secured. All in the form of a question, of course.
