I'm glad that someone outside of Hammond can see McDermott for the unbecoming narcissist he is. Anyone from Hammond speaking this truth will have their motivations questioned. Whatever you say about Tom McDermott, if it is not praiseful, it is denounced as a political attack and "hater" speech. John Dodge has no ambitions to run for mayor of Hammond, nor does he have a political ax to grind here, but he sees that like a kid in a candy shop, Tom McDermott's eyes light up and his excitement overt, over the thought of national exposure, even in a humiliating story like the excessive force lawsuit, or the sad deaths of victims of a serial killer. Tom McDermott's ego and narcissism are impossible to ignore.

Lubu & Tiger,

Besides John Dodge, Chuck Goudy an well respected Channel 7 investigative reporter, also lambasted, while on a radio show, with a several hundred thousand listeners. McDermott statement was about the Vann murders.... McDermott a Notre Dame law school graduate was pounding his chest on this would be a capital murder case, talking as if he has control of the Bernie Carter's Office. Carter is the Lake County Prosecutor.

BTW, John Dodge has some North West Indiana affiliations, Dodge is a graduate of Purdue College of Liberal Arts, &
Brian Lamb School of Communication at Purdue University

And now David Rutter a long time journalist and news paper editor takes a swipe @ the Honorable Mayor Thomas McDermott Jr.

Apparently McDermott doesn't have the slightest idea how much of a moron he really is, and apparently the people around him don't have enough courage to tell this man how well he is sealing his future.

Thomas McDermott Jr's political and career future outside of opening his own law firm, is nill, as his public comments seem to be putting more nails in his coffin. No respectable law firm/lobbyist group would consider this guy for any position above a janitor because of his mouth.

Now Tom McDermott Jr is drawing attention from outside the region. Attention he can't control.

I've written both Dodge & Rutter to do a follow up article on a couple of things here in Tom's Hammond, just to expand on how problematic McDermott's administration is with regard to racism.

Rutter: For Hammond’s mayor, it’s all about him

We stand stunned and dazed by the horror of mass murder in Northwest Indiana, but it’s not all bad news.

Sure, seven women were brutally murdered, but there’s no use fixating on human degradation. Look at the bright side.

Hammond Mayor Tom McDermott does.

Of course, if you are Gary’s mayor trying to find a way through the evil maze, enduring McDermott’s civic taunts and cheerleading — my town’s better than your town — does not seem so charming.

But, hey, don’t be a party pooper. You just have to appreciate the happier political benefits of serial murder.

So while a normal person would offer solace to grieving families and calm to a shocked community, McDermott was taking credit for his crack police force solving the crime. It’s as if he’d found the cure to Ebola.

He was victory-lapping around his Twitter and Facebook accounts last weekend. Two bits, four bits, six bits, a dollar. All for Hammond, stand up and holler. It has a ring to it, don’t you think?

McDermott’s Twitter account was ablaze with breathless revelations and admiration.

“Hammond PD solves motel murder, nabs serial killer from Gary in process — will be a nationwide story, stay tuned,” said the mayor.

On two Facebook posts, McDermott praised the Hammond police investigation, making sure to stand close to the boys in blue to get the maximum PR effect.

This was especially useful on the heels of a lawsuit against the department claiming several officers whupped and falsely a man during a routine traffic stop.

McDermott has used his personal Facebook page to cheer for his police department.

“As you hear the details of this grisly murder in a Hammond motel room and discover how this murder was solved by our police, it will make you proud of the Hammond PD,” McDermott wrote. “... Hammond, and NWI, are safer today because this murder case was solved.”

And, then, oh by the way, “Our condolences and prayers go out to the victims and to the families of the victims.”

Of course, Northwest Indiana was not safer the day before Afrika Hardy’s body was found in that motel room. Darren D. Vann was just another ex-con sexual predator that police generally ignore.

Nothing in the discovery of Vann’s evil deserves civic crowing.

Of course, for anyone who wants to make political coinage while standing over the corpses of seven dead women, the preference for measured, subdued leadership won’t appeal much. Two bits, four bits, etc.

McDermott also made sure everyone knew all but one of the bodies were dumped in Gary rather than Hammond. And that Gary has 10,000 abandoned buildings while Hammond is the Golden City on the Hill. Good point, Your Honor.

But let us take a divergent approach. Though we appreciate the cheering, this crime was solved for two pedestrian reasons, neither of them involving a Hercule Poirot revelation.

The de facto Internet escort service that “facilitated” the most recent tryst for Vann kept good phone records. Or at least, he left a fat electronic footprint on file with them. Worried about her, Hardy’s friends, not police, found her body. They served up Vann to police.

And second, Vann talked so freely about his apparent murder spree, including giving Hammond police the locations of the other six bodies, that the cops barely had time to scribble down the incriminating notes.

This was not sleuthing genius.

No police force cared who Vann was or knew what he was doing, and no one with a badge in Northwest Indiana protected anyone from anything.

They lucked out in catching Vann. Luck is good. But luck is an accident.

No one was watching out for the seven women Vann is accused of killing during the 13 months since his release from a Texas prison on another sex assault. They died in the shadows. No one cheered for them.

Except for one, the victims were young and black and all apparently were part of the casual sex trade. They were invisible humans, just as were the three teenage boys David Maust murdered in Hammond the same year McDermott was first elected mayor.

As for politicians with a taste for facile self-admiration, invisible victims are handy tools, even if they’re dead.

Now they are just seven props to decorate the stage. To a hammer, everything looks like a nail.

FBI says examination not complete in Hammond police case

2 hours ago • Ed Bierschenk edwin.bierschenk@nwi.com, (219) 933-4195

HAMMOND | The FBI's probe into a Sept. 24 traffic stop in which two Hammond police officers were accused of using excessive force is ongoing despite recent statements from Mayor Thomas McDermott Jr. that indicated it was completed.

"The matter is still under investigation," said Bob Ramsey, FBI Supervisory Special Agent with the Merrillville office of the law enforcement agency. He declined to put a timeline on the completion of the examination.

He said the FBI is still "actively gathering information" and conducting an ongoing review. The bureau, for example, is still looking for information from the attorney for Jamal Jones and Lisa Mahone, both of Hammond, who filed a federal lawsuit in October against the city and officers Patrick Vicari and Charles Turner.

Ramsey said the FBI typically does not announce when an investigation is complete. He said part of the investigation is to see if any civil rights may have been violated, with the final decision resting with the U.S. Attorney's office.

McDermott did not return calls Tuesday seeking comment and Ramsey declined to say whether he had spoken with city officials about the mayor's statements.

Tuesday afternoon, however, McDermott issued a statement on his Facebook page regarding the issue.

McDermott wrote that after hearing a report on National Public Radio that "contradicted statements I made regarding the FBI's investigation into the Hammond Police Department, I immediately contacted Jay Abbott, Special Agent in charge of the state of Indiana. He requested that I clarify statements that were previously made regarding the status of the investigation.

"Based on my conversation with Agent Abbott, he informed me that this matter is still being assessed by the Civil Rights Division at the U.S. Department of Justice. Until the assessment is complete, there will not be a determination whether a 'formal investigation' will be initiated.

"Agent Abbott stressed that anyone with additional information regarding the Jones incident may contact the FBI, who is collecting information for the assessment by the U.S. Department of Justice."

The October lawsuit, filed by attorney Dana Kurtz on behalf of Jones and Mahone, allege the police used excessive force in a Sept. 24 traffic stop during which a Taser was used on Jones. Police have said officers feared for their safety because one officer saw Jones drop his hand behind a center console of the vehicle.

They also contend Jones ignored repeated requests to get out of the vehicle during the incident. The lawsuit is still pending.

During the FBI inquiry, McDermott said the officers were voluntarily assigned to office duty by the city. Monday, however, he issued a statement that the FBI had informed the Hammond Police Department that it had cleared the two officers involved in the arrest to return to active duty.
As a result, he said, the police department placed them back on regular duty.

When asked about McDermott's statement that the FBI had cleared the officers to return to active duty, Ramsey said that is not a position the agency would take. Whether the officers are returned to active duty is a personnel decision for the city to make, he said.

Dear God, what is wrong with this man? Let's hope Jr's abusing alcohol, and not following the foot steps of Rob Ford.

Sparks flying! OMG did Tom and Jed loose it the other morning on WJED?

Has WJOB been the receptor of FCC complaints.... from what I heard, it's caused a major internal reform, one of which is the Cavity of the Region not hosting McDermott's current campaign show.

It is interesting that McDermott worked so hard at discrediting Lefty.... there are many fine outstanding felons in the region, among the Philpot, VanTill, Pabey and a whole host of others. http://www.northwestindiana.com/discussionforum/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=10664&sid=ae1661de83bd5c890fcedc05d50054d6.

But a larger question is surrounding Campaign finances...... Will Jr and his significant other be the first in Indiana to mimic the Jacksons, for the same reason the Jacksons went to jail?

Tom, you better think about correcting those campaign finance reports ala Karen.

Tom has got some major balls, telling Penn he should resign.

Mayor Thomas McDermott Jr has taken Hammond from Tripple A Credit rating to junk bond status. He's broke a half dozen laws himself, some of which very well may affect his law license if a complaint was lobbied against him, placed $17 million of your tax dollars at risk.

And he himself cost Hammond Residents because of his Race Bated comments $200,000 plus legal fees. I wonder if he got a high volume discount.

[color=#800000]Bacerra, got a $200,000 judgement, defended by HUD against the city of Hammond for a Civil Rights Violation....what I understand, Mayor Thomas McDermott Jr, who was going to run for Lt. Gov., then Governor, the US Senate, then Lobbyist, then joining a law firm, his own discriminatory statements, were the foundation on which Bacerra, received her award. This didn't need to make the federal docket. The evidence was over whelming!

HUD probably threatened Hammond would not receive another penny, if they did not acquiesce.

HAMMOND, INDIANA AND HAMMOND HOUSING AUTHORITY SETTLE DISCRIMINATION COMPLAINT
Former HHA Executive Director claimed she was wrongfully terminated for helping minority families

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) announced today that the city of Hammond, Indiana, and the Hammond Housing Authority (HHA) agreed to pay Maria Becerra, the former executive director of HHA $200,000 to settle allegations the city and HHA terminated her employment because she administered a HUD-funded rental assistance program that helped minority familiesmove into predominantly white neighborhoods In addition, HHA agreed to reopen its Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) program waiting list and inform the public about the reopening of the list.

In March 2012, Becerra filed a complaint with HUD alleging that in December of 2011 she was wrongfully terminated from her position as Executive Director of the HHA because she assisted persons using HCVs in finding housing in the Hammond neighborhood of their choice. Becerra further alleged that the mayor of Hammond made public statements supporting her ouster, claiming that the HCV program had grown “out of control” and “exploded” during her tenure.

The Fair Housing Act makes it unlawful to discriminate in housing because of race, color, national origin, religion, sex, disability or familial status. The Act also makes it illegal to retaliate against a person for supporting the housing rights of others. In addition, Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, color, and national origin in programs and activities receiving federal financial assistance.

“HUD’s Housing Choice Voucher program is designed to help lower income families find housing in safe neighborhoods and climb the ladder of social and economic opportunity,” said Bryan Greene, HUD's Acting Assistant Secretary for Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity. "We’re pleased that, under this Agreement, the HHA commits itself to implement this program in a fair manner and provide greater housing choices for families of all backgrounds.”

The Housing Choice Voucher Program is HUD’s major rental assistance vehicle for assisting low-income families, the elderly, and people with disabilities to obtain affordable housing in the private rental market. Rental assistance is provided on behalf of the family or individual, allowing program participants to find their own rental housing, including single-family homes, townhouses, and apartments.

Under the terms of the Conciliation Agreement and Voluntary Compliance Agreement http://portal.hud.gov/hudportal/documents/huddoc?id=HammondHA_12-23-13.pdfthat settled these allegations, relevant city and HHA staff and board members will receive fair housing training; the Mayor of Hammond will issue a public statement in support of HCVs and the HCV program in Hammond; the cityand HHA will sponsor a public outreach forum to encourage landlord participation in the HCV program; and HHA will expend at least 97 percent of its annual HCV budget each year.

What a putz.

Hammond pact called a new beginning

http://www.nwitimes.com/news/local/lake/hammond-pact-called-a-new-beginning/article_66b3b9b9-d3ba-52da-b4d9-b9f38d0e66ba.html

HAMMOND — Black community leaders, Hammond police and other officials on Thursday signed an agreement described as a new beginning in police/community relations.

But the fanfare surrounding the signing of the five-year agreement, which calls for the establishment of a Hammond Police and Citizens Advisory Commission, quickly ended when several people — some with complaints alleging police have used excessive force and engaged in racial profiling — criticized officials for not including them in negotiations.

In addition to the advisory commission, the agreement calls for stronger community policing programs; increased use of social media by the Police Department; cultural competency and procedural justice training for all officers and community partners; body cameras; and collaboration on officer recruitment efforts. Many of the changes already have been made, police said.

The city, the Police Department, the Fraternal Order of Police, the Hammond Ministerial Alliance and the Hammond branch of the NAACP reached the deal after hundreds of hours of meetings and eight mediation sessions led by U.S. Justice Department Senior Conciliation Specialist Kenith Bergeron, officials said.

The groups began the talks last year following unrest over a controversial traffic stop that put Hammond in the national spotlight and complaints about police ticketing teenagers for jaywalking.

The FBI confirmed in October 2014 that it had opened an investigation into the traffic stop involving Jamal Jones and Lisa Mahone, who sued the city and officers Patrick Vicari and Charles Turner earlier that month in U.S. District Court.

Jones and Mahone alleged the officers used excessive force Sept. 24 when they smashed a passenger-side window on Mahone's vehicle, used a Taser on Jones and pulled him from the car.

LaPorte County officials issued a warrant for Jones shortly after his federal lawsuit was filed, alleging he failed to appear for a 2007 court hearing in a misdemeanor marijuana case. The federal lawsuit has been stayed pending the outcome of the criminal case.

The NAACP at an Oct. 10, 2014, news conference called for Vicari and Turner to be pulled from street duty and accused police of being too aggressive and escalating situations during minor arrests. Protesters blocked traffic outside City Hall in December 2014 as a way to call attention to the jaywalking complaints.

Hammond Mayor Thomas McDermott Jr. said the city was more on edge in the fall of 2014 than at any other time in his 12 years in office.

It was then that U.S. Attorney David Capp reached out to McDermott and offered to put him in touch with Bergeron, the mayor said.

The Police Department has made many changes during last 15 months, McDermott said. One of the most visible changes is that all of Hammond’s uniformed officers are now wearing body cameras, he said.

“Hammond is a diverse city. Hammond is proud to be a diverse city,” McDermott said. “Everyone is working well together, and those were tough times. We’ve come through that, and hopefully we’ll be stronger because of it.”

Barbara Bolling-Williams, president of the Indiana NAACP, said the people involved in negotiations initially were unsure of each others' motives but eventually learned to trust they had the same goals.

Several residents became upset after the signing ceremony because they were not allowed to speak.

Kitten Gray, of Hammond, talked to Bergeron, the Justice Department official, about several of the complaints that have been lodged against Hammond police.

Gray said those complaints include several excessive force cases, allegations surrounding jaywalking tickets, and lack of transparency.

Gray said she felt encouraged because Bergeron told her there is still an ongoing investigation into the complaints.

“At this point I pray that the truth comes to light,” she said. “I will hold onto hope that this issue will be resolved in the very near future.”

Hammond resident Carlotta Blake-King said she felt betrayed because she and other activists, who initially brought complaints about jaywalking to light, were not involved in the discussions that led to the agreement. She claimed she repeatedly asked the Hammond chapter of the NAACP if meetings were being held and was told just Monday that the matter was confidential.

“There’s no trust,” she said. “You can’t build trust on a lie.”

The Rev. Homer Cobb, president of the Hammond NAACP, said the talks progressed much like a union negotiates a new contract. Not every union member can be present at the bargaining table, but the leaders eventually take the deal back to everyone.

“We would not be this far if we involved that many from the community,” he said. “It’s not a matter of shunning people. It was a matter of size and magnitude.”

Cobb said he expected some people would be upset, but the process is not closed and the commission will be able to deal with issues.

Representatives from the groups that participated in mediation sessions will be considered founding members and make up the Hammond Police and Citizens Advisory Commission’s Central Advisory Committee. Other members of the commission will include at least five people nominated and elected from each of the city’s five policing districts.

Candidates for the commission must be able to document at least five years of community service and accomplishments and not currently have a complaint or lawsuit against a local or state law enforcement agency. Blake-King has a pending federal lawsuit against McDermott and other for her termination from United Neighborhoods Inc.

Interesting article considering Hammond's Mayor Thomas McDermott Jr having to settle a HUD fair housing discrimination lawsuit, which had there been a trial, may have cost McDermott Jr his Notre Dame law degree.

Not exactly a quote, but the NWI Times has a daily feature where tax paying citizens can obtain crime statistics in their community.

Conspicuously missing.... Hammond. I guess Hammond citizens have no right to have crime statistics, or is it crime is so rampant it would unseat McDermott Jr due to incompetence?

It fairly well commonly known a certain Mayor of the largest municipality in NWI gets hammered. It's part of the four spades club in lieu of calling it card games where Jr always seems to win. Pay off money? Naw, not in northwest indiana.

Randy Palmateer got busted in his second owi. It appears the owi charges were reduced
and the union leader got a pass. But in the traffic stop, Palmateer implied he had just left
Tom McDermott's house..... Palmateer stating take a look at the text.

Is it true Palmateer got hammered at Jr's residence? Did McDermott Jr set up Palmateer just like he did with an area attorney? Yep, after a meeting with "friends" a local prominent attorney, a friend of Tom's got nailed by a traffic stop. Inside story.... one of Tom's people called a commander, who called a patrol sgt, who called a beat cop to make a traffic stop.

So ya got to ask... did Jr set Palmateer up because of a soft endorsement?

Hammond Mayor Thomas McDermott said he was confident the Hammond Cabela's would stay open, since it was once the retailer's most profitable store.

"I'm not intimidated," he said. "It's a great, well-performing store. The Boulevard is strong in that area. And it's close to Chicago. Hammond always has that going for it."

WTF.... Not intimidated... what in the world has intimidation have to do with Bass Pro purchasing Cabella's?

Then Tommie's younger brother says something quite the contrary to Jr's statements. :

Quote:
The Bass Pro in Portage has a lease through 2027 with a publically traded real estate investment trust, but Cabela's owns the Hammond store, Latitude Commercial President Aaron McDermott said.

"While I think the Hammond site has the stronger demographics, mostly population density within a 15 minute drive time, the fact the two are so close together could put Hammond in jeopardy IF sales weren't all that strong there," he said. "That doesn't take into account any sort of financial agreement they might have with the city when they went there though. Then again the issue with those buildings is that they are so unique it would be very difficult to find a buyer or tenant to occupy the building if they were to close. It's not your typical big box that you can split into multiple tenants or find another user."

Was Arron using code with regard to the McDermott interest in the property? It's been long reported McDermott Sr owned a good portion of the land in which WallMart Super store sits on.

Cabella's business is NOT good. Every time I have gone there, hardly any customers. They have good products, but Walmart killed them.

Tiger.... Cabela's cost have always been extremely high for the value purchased.... they work on making it a destination. Catch phrase for overpriced goods.

As to the McDermott's (plural) Daddy as part of the Cabela's deal reported to have got some land and just under $1,000,000 for "consulting services." At the time the old man didn't have a real estate license, consulting services received were reportedly questionable.

Funny thing tho, daddy either didn't pay his taxes...IRS hit him with, if I remember correctly, 3 different IRS tax liens mounting well upwards of $1.5 mil. BTW, the last time I checked daddy's property taxes, he's a late pay, no pay status again. This time, as Sr's juice recently just passed away, I don't think Sr is going to have another property tax bail out from the richest man in Indiana, now deceased.

FYI, At the last tax sale, old man McDermott's property was never recorded in an exchange of hands from the tax sale.

Back to the Cabela's land deal... in a conversation with a Muster Atty, Sr reportedly got title to some of the Cabela area land. Remember Jr didn't want to close off the Northcotte Bridge, which would have eliminated flood risk to a couple of thousand people? Yep, Jr wanted the bridge to remain open, as a new exit road would have had to been carved out of some of the land where Walmart now sits. Sr would have lost hundreds of thousands dollars on the pass thru road. Walmart would never been built.

I wonder how much taxes Walmart is contributing to police, fire, schools, and library? Nada, it goes to a tiff... while Hammond residents pay higher taxes.

So your right, with regard to Hammond's Cabela, Walmart put an end to their top store rating.

& isn't it sweet Jr's not intimidated by Cabela's purchase? That's JR's words.

This is all a big mess.Hammond residents lost on this big time. I see the Cabella's closing next year. As for the other development, where is it? There sure is not much there. I thought there was supposed to be a water park and movie theaters.

Congrats to Hammond purchasing a building on Hohman Ave & converting it into a
Police garage…..

Purchase price $285,000. Now a TIMES article states there was an error estimating plumbing issues. Instead of $200,000 to complete plumbing and tuck pointing Improvements, now looks a bit more like $500,000.

The article, written by John J. Watkins, fails to cover some basic information, but hell were talking about the TIMES here, an award winning regional news paper. Absent from this award winning article, who gave the recommendation to buy the building, and who did complete the plumbing and building condition (tuck pointing) inspections?

Was it a city employee, a plumbing inspector, a building inspector, an engineering firm or did Phil Taillon himself give the a ok, absent those basic inspections?

Let's see what happens with this project.

The fact remains someone made a $300,000 mistake. Not chump change. Reasonable question I think regarding the plumbing and tuck pointing deficiencies. Phill’s a pro, and this sounds like a rookie mistake, maybe.

Funny thing, the property was listed by a real estate company who’s principal owner is related to our very own Hammond Mayor Thomas McDermott Jr. I wonder if Jr’s brother’s company made a commission on the deal?

Want a couple of more laughs? Had the estimate for plumbing & tuck pointing work been more accurate, would the deal have gone south costing a McDermott relative a commission? Acquisition cost would have risen to $785,000.

Hey, but let’s look on the bright side, besides the addition of a public works garage, a friend of Jr’s, I’d guess a relative and or at least a campaign contributor who owns a tuck pointer business gets to make nearly a guaranteed $250,000 and a plumber friend of Jr gets to make another $250,000.

I wonder if the building is gonna need a roof soon. More patronage.

Last laugh? The skilled trades person who laid down that fancy cross walk brick work in DT Hammond may not have done an adequate job…. Those cross walks are literally fallin apart. I wonder if they're in the running for that tuck pointing work.

There's plenty of money in those TIFF's... unfortunately that money doesn't go to Hammond's Schools, Libraries and other general services.

Reminds me of another Hammond Public Works Project. Those Harrison Park Tennis Courts. The bill was to be around $450,000, the original contractor received payment, then... went out of business. They had to rebid the job, another $500,000. Those tennis courts ran nearly $1,000,000.

No litigation against the original contractor seeking reimbursement.... at least on of Tom's best friends could have racked up some legal fees suing an bankrupt contractor.
