More seniors sign up for utility bill discount

HIGHLAND | If you are a utility customer age 65 or older in Highland, you can apply for a $1 discount on your monthly utility bill.

The Town Council approved discounts Monday for 35 senior customers. Last month, it did the same for 46 others.

The discount is on the refuse portion of the utility bills and is absorbed by the town's refuse collector, Republic Services Inc.

With so many people applying for the discounts, the council took one vote for all 35 applicants on Monday. It did the same thing in the previous meeting.

"It's an administrative action," Clerk-Treasurer Michael Griffin said of the approvals.

To make things less complicated, the council will vote at its next meeting on an ordinance to allow Public Works Director John Bach to approve the discounts without reaching the council level.

The board also temporarily removed two items from its agenda, saying it needs adequate time to study them before taking votes.

The council will study a favorable recommendation from the Board of Zoning Appeals to allow a U-Lock storage facility to be built along Ernie Strack Drive, just west of the Strack & Van Til grocery store.

This proposal has been opposed by residents of the Boulevard Estates subdivision, a block to the west of the site.

The board also will study another BZA recommendation to allow Garfield Lodge 569 to move to 8630 Kennedy Ave.

Both issues could be voted on at the board's May 17 business meeting.

When you're a senior you'll probably take any give back the city is willing to offer but this seems like a lot of fuss over $1. Couldn't they have at least made it $5? So far this is costing the town a whopping $80 a month. What's the point? Is this to show seniors their town board cares about them? Reminds me of former Hammond mayor Dedlow's cheap awful candy drop in a parade that some contend may have contributed to his being unseated.

If you want to give the seniors a break then give them a break! After tax you can't even get a breakfast muffin at McDonalds to go with that free senior coffee for $1.
