ST. JOHN | A St. John police captain could face a year in jail after a misdemeanor complaint was filed against him in Michigan, authorities there said.

Bernie Johnsen was charged in Eaton County, Mich., with malicious destruction of personal property valued at $200 or more but less than $1,000, said Michael Eagen, senior assistant prosecuting attorney in Eaton County.

The charge is punishable by one year in prison and/or a $2,000 fine, Eagen said.

A complaint was filed against Johnsen, but he has not yet been arraigned.

In Michigan, people are given an opportunity to turn themselves in before an arrest warrant is issued, so a warrant has not gone out for Johnsen yet, Eagen said.

Eagen would not disclose information about the incident for which Johnsen is charged, explaining that Michigan has strict pre-trial rules about information being made public.

St. John Police Chief Fred Frego confirmed that the matter is being looked into.

"There is an internal investigation under way," he said.

Frego could not comment on whether Johnsen will be disciplined, nor the type of discipline he could face. Until the investigation is completed, Frego said he does not know whether the matter will go to the Police Commission for review.

Eaton County is located just south of Lansing, Mich.
