Almost 14 months ago, I had to have my "Granddog" put to sleep. It was the hardest thing I have ever been through in my life.

His name was Ross Allen. Yep, he had a middle name. I guess it's the redneck in me that made me do that.

My daughter rescued him from the dog pound in 1995 when he was only 8 weeks old. He was the cutest puppy I have ever seen in my life, and I fell in love with him the first time I saw him. I just took over caring for him, and he became "Grandpa's" dog.

Rossie Pup and I were best friends for ten years, and he shared my love for "Jeepin' ." He would ride in the back of my Jeep as I drove all over the trails at my favorite off road area.

I have only recently ceased crying at least once a day, but I still cry very often when I get him on my mind. He was such a special, special dog.

I created a website to honor him, and this is included as one of the pages in that site. Many people have told me that it expresses their own feelings towards their dogs. I call it, "Is There Any Wonder?"

If you like this, and if you are a dog lover, you might enjoy visiting that website I created for him.

God bless.

Tom

While other family members were too wrapped up in their own activities to give me more than a cursory acknowledgement that I was home, you had been waiting for me all day, and you gave me a hero’s welcome as I walked through the door after work. My arrival was the high point of your day. I would not have traded even one of your after-work back door greetings for a ticker tape parade in New York City followed by a trip to Washington, D.C., for a reception in my honor at the White House.

When I get out of the truck after work and walk up to the house, I still expect to see you there at the door, with that wagging tail and that loving look shining in your eyes, waiting to give me those big, wet, sloppy doggy kisses.

Often when I talk to humans, they only halfway listen, having their minds on something else, but you always had time to listen to my problems, and you always gave me your complete, undivided attention as I spoke to you.

People are sometimes in a bad mood and are best left alone, but you were never in a bad mood; it was never a “bad time” to talk to you. You were always there for me.

No matter what sacrifices I make for other family members, it often goes unnoticed or unappreciated, but the least little pat on the head, or a “good dog,” or an “I love you” would thrill you. And, if I took time to play with you, it was almost too much excitement for you to handle.

Humans are always expecting something, making demands, but you asked for so little; you only asked for my love and a tiny bit of attention once in a while. You brought joy and a deep peace to my life every day, and you repaid me for the simple little things that I had to do for you, like feeding you and taking you outside, a million times over.

People have their own lives to live and their own business to tend to; they have places to go, people to talk to, things to get done, and no matter how much they love me, they can only give me part of their time. But, I was the center of your life. You had no life apart from me. I was your life.

Is there any wonder that I loved you so much? Is there any wonder why it hurt me so badly to say goodbye to you on that awful day, September 19, 2005? Is there any wonder why I still cry for you almost every day, even now, almost eight months after you had to leave me? Is there any wonder that I will love you forever and will not be whole again until we are reunited? Rossie Pup, Grandpa loves you, and Grandpa misses you

How is Grampa doing?

I couldn't get past your post, much less visit your website right now  ...but I will.

My little buddy just had his 15th birthday...and the thought of losing him is too much to think about.

I just try not to think about it and enjoy the days as they come.

I know someday I'll be in your shoes...and I know no matter when it happens it'll be way too soon.

Sorry.

Tony:

I'm doing OK, but I know that to some extent, at least, the grieving will go on until I once again can wrap my arms around old Rossie Pup's neck and give him a hug. I truly believe that he and I will be reunited and that I will never again have to say goodbye to him. Thanks for asking, Tony.

I will pray that God will grant you and your little guy many, many more days to spend together in good health. I will also pray that God will take him when the time comes without his suffering and that He will help you to get through it.

This world can be so wonderful, but it can also be so sad. I'm glad that a far better place awaits us.

What's your little guy's name? What kind of pooch is he?

Let me know what you think of that website, once you check it out.

Tom

I looked at the website. I admire you for being able to so freely express your feelings. It sounds like it was a lucky day for both Ross Allen and you when you met. :D

Thanks, Free.

Oh, it was more than just "luck." I believe the Good Lord intended for Old Ross Allen and I to be buds.

I'm glad Tony responded to your post. You were asking earlier if there were any posters to have a nice conversation with, and she is one of the nicest in my experuience. :D

That is a great love you have for your dog. You are a true dog lover as am I. I know what you are saying about people who don't really care when you talk about your dog. I have a dog right now that I love very much too. She is 2 years old and is the sweetest dog I have ever had and I have had many over the years. She is smart and very well behaved. She is always attached to me where ever I go. I have had her since she was 8 weeks old. When I talk about her to other family members they think I am nuts. {They don't like dogs as much as I do}

It is as hard on a person when a pet dies as it is when a human loved one dies. I know it gets easier over time.

Your website is a great tribute to mans best friend.

I live in a little town called Greenville, which is in western KY. Actually, I live outside the city limits, sort of in the country. Greenville has a population of only about 5000 people. This is where both my mom and my dad grew up.

My sister lives in Kentucky too, outside a little town called TAykorsville, which is near Bardstown. Have you ever been there? They have many beautifully preserved old buildings.

Have been to Bardstown, but it has been many years since I was there. I don't remember ever being in Taylorsville.

Guess I'm gonna hit the sack. Old people need their rest, you know.

Thanks so much, Tom...we're aiming towards another 5 good years...you know, we like to take small steps

He's an attack dog and he's ready to take a bite out of anyone coming near me, and he's always at my side ;) ... the best Christmas present I ever got! He was just a day shy of 6 weeks when I brought him home...cutest little furball these eyes ever saw... still is.

They really are our greatest of friends...animals.

Your grandog will be waiting for you, Tom... in fact, I think he's still with you everywhere you go :)
