The community needs to use imminent domain to strip the city of Gary of land donated to it by U. S. Steel to build Liberty Island and a national park.
Lake County needs something like navy pier and the city of Gary is not developing valuable real estate the City of Gary is the only city on the lake that did not use it's money the state offered to build a public access fishing pier. The money that comes with the statue could be used as the matching money but some type of deal has to be drawn up so the department of interior and the region can play a role in developing the park and it should be up under the jurisdiction of the region.
I like to fish and the water give us something that does not close at sundown !
The money comes from taxes on fishing equipment and boats so before you nay sayers get going its tax dollars that are sitting there that the city of Gary can't get because the city needs the matching dollars.
Who ever is awarded the statue Gets 7 million dollars.

I remember a comment you made about it being a hazard to aircraft, but just which city actually HAS an airport?
Funny thing. Gary just announced a 20% cut in the city budget and everybody's all up in arms over layoffs, cutbacks, and new scheduling. So how could you have paid for all this now anyway?
Just be happy for Hammond and hope folks flying over on route to Midway and O'Hare wanna come visit the Region to check it out. Who knows? In time maybe Gary will have something to come visit besides the renounced Bennigans. Oops! Better scratch the Bennigans, going out of business & all.
