CROWN POINT | Lake County Police Chief Marco Kuyachich is instituting a program requiring the public's help.

"Some sex offenders have not registered, and we do not know where they live," Kuyachich said. "In order to file charges against them, we must identify their residence."

To that end, the Police Department is asking citizens to call its sex offender registry section at (219) 755-3321 if they know the location of those offenders.

Sex offenders are required to register every 90 days or annually, depending on the crime. If a registered sex offender moves, he or she must re-register within 72 hours. Complete information on sex offenders, the law and frequently asked questions may be found on the Web site at lakecountysheriff.com or www.indianasheriffs.org.

The county police will provide one picture a week for a particular offender and the last known address and alias.

This week's individual is Lavern Bunny Barnes, also known as Laverne Rodgers, whose last known address was 4716 McCook Ave., East Chicago.

"We have always had an impressive response when we have asked the public for their assistance, and we are depending on them again," Kuyachich said.

Thank you! It's long overdue.

The thing is Mirage, if they move from out of state, peole may not know that they are sex offenders, and going up and asking them if they afre, may not be a wise move to make when greeting new neighbors

I applaud the efforts though, but if this is what it is coming down to, who is dropping the ball on these people falling through the cracks?
