The Lake County Council decided today that department heads WILL cut 15% from their 2010 budgets, or they'll do it for them.
The Council says 10% must come from salary accounts. The other 5% can come from other department expenditures.
I couldn't stick around to obtain the list, but apparently some department heads have thumbed their noses at an earlier Council mandate to make the cuts. Now, the Council says when it must provide the state with specific budget numbers, it will make the cuts and might take ir all from the salary line. Dozens of county employees are expected to be fired.
County financial manager Dante Rondelli said with that scenario, the budget considered by the Council today is balanced.
County officials watching the proceedings closely from the audience included Sheriff Roy Dominguez, Surveyor George Van Til, treasurer John Petalas and Auditor Peggy Katona.

Well that's a start.

I agree there are a number of jobs that should be cut, but from the top down, not the bottom up. When are we going to close these useless Assessor's offices and Trustee's offices. During all this talk nation wide about hard times and cut backs, when are we going to start cutting back welfare? Maybe you can answer that one Freemoney?
