Who do you think the Times will endorse in the Democratic primary for Lake County sheriff?

I haven't a clue, but I don't think it will be Philpot or Buncich.

What do you think?

The Times will pick Philpot for his years of dedicated public service. :P

I wouldn't be too surprised if the Times decides to not endorse anyone on the Dem side and just endorse a certain Republican for sheriff who shoulda won in the general last time. ;)

There is not 1 Dem running who would make a good sheriff. Don't blame the voters for the Dems failing to attract a quality candidate.

I have a hard time thinking they will go with Buncich based on his reign as sheriff before and some of his antics since. If either paper is stupid enough to endorse Buncich it will be time to write them off and create a new source of local media coverage. Obviously not just because of 1 lame endorsement. More like one bad choice too many over the years on a number of issues.

I don't see it being Philpot because they've criticized his musical chair office hopping.

The sleaziest scumbag running... This might be a difficult one for even the Times to decide on! My vote goes to Philpot, he fits right in.

I say the times will endorse Mr. Ligon. The reason for that is because the Times is 100 percent behind what Sheriff Dominguez says. Since Sheriff Dominguez endorsed Mr. Ligon, the Times will do the same.

Do you think it should be a campaign issue if a sheriff candidate has been married 5 times?
Do you think that demonstrates some instability?
I think that's part of the reason the Times won't endorse Philpot.
I'm guessing they go with Frank DuPey or Don Parker.

I can't see anyone endorsing Philpot. He is nothing more than a total embarrassment to not only the democratic party; but the whole Lake County election process. I believe Mr. Mcdermott, who chairs the party needs to come out publicly critical of Mr. Philpot. Since Mayor Mcdermott is supposed to be this so called progressive leader of the party. Although i think that is just his rhetoric. I think he is all about himself. And himself only. That does not mean that Philpot does not have a chance to win this election. This is just a view of his character, or lack there of.

I think Philpot may be a narcissist, like MDermott.
I think he truly thinks Lake County actually needs him for some reason known only to him.
He's certainly smart enough, that's not his problem. IMO, His stability is questionable and he's steeped in ol school politics. and that's the last thing Lake County needs.
I'll bet he hasn't spent two whole days in a row working at the Coroner's job he told voters he wanted.
Guys like him really have an unfair advantage. He has a county job no matter how things turn out, and he can set his own hours, leaving lots of time for shaking hands.
Wonder if he's driving around campaigning all over the county on county gas? Who would know? I''m sure that county vehicle he wanted for so long and a gas card came with his coroner job.
I'd like to see a law change that would require candidates, at least at the county level and above, to quit their existing jobs in order to campaign for another.
Philpot is the epitome of what's wrong with the current setup.

Can't even get the quote right!
And where do you spend YOUR truly taxpayer funded check? I earned my Social Security check with many years of work in the private sector. I had marketable skills so I didn't need a politician to find me a position (Or 3).
Have you held a single job in the past decade that wasn't a patronage position?

WE all know Philpot thinks all reporters are incompetent or after him. It's part of his emotional disfunction, IMO.
"May" is incorrectly repeating something Philpot said to me on his paid WJOB program some time ago.

Now can we PLEASE return to my topic-the race for the LC Sheriff's office?

Hey doggie

You were barking up the right tree. The Times hasn't endorsed in the sheriff's race yet, but the Post-Tribune has indeed endorsed Ligon.

Here's the endorsement:

Interesting choice given the guy lives in Gary.

EDITORIAL: We endorse Ligon, Bursac in Lake County sheriff's races

Our opinion: We endorse Col. Richard Ligon for the Democratic nomination for Lake County sheriff and Dan Bursac for the Republican nomination.

I guess I can live with either one of these choices based on what was cited for the reasons for the endorsements. Obviously few voters know much of anything about Col. Ligon but his background suggests he might be very beneficial for the office but I'm still hoping for Bursac to win in November to start bringing balance to county politics if for no other reason, but he also seems well qualified.

I love how the Times cited Philpot for office hopping. We need an election law to put an end to that practice.

Good endorsements for a change Times!
