Champs come home to Lowell

LOWELL | After earning their place in history as the 2005 Class 4A football champions, the "Runnin' Red Devils" drank in the glory during a Sunday afternoon pep rally that drew hundreds of delirious fans.

The rally followed their triumphant return home late Saturday during which they were escorted from Interstate 65 to the town by both Lowell Police and Volunteer Fire departments and later honored at a late-night celebration at Zuni's in Lowell.

"Everybody in the state now knows where Lowell is," head coach Kirk Kennedy told the crowd, which, the moment the team walked in, sprang to its feet and remained there for the duration of the event.

Lowell High School Principal Jim Koger agreed. "We made a statement throughout Indiana yesterday at the RCA Dome," he said. "This is a team with a passion to win."

Kennedy admitted the winning ride has been a bit overwhelming.

"For 17 years, we've been (attending) the state championship games. It seemed so far," Kennedy said. "You try to put in words to express how you feel."

Kennedy said his pride in the team members is as high as his gratitude to the community that embraced it.

"These are courageous men ... There is an example set for groups to follow," Kennedy said, pointing to youngsters ringing the gymnasium. "These young men are tomorrow's leaders."

As the crowd remained standing, the young gridiron wonders, wearing their championship medals, thanked the fans for their support.

"You guys believed in us," Scott Gray told the crowd, while his teammate Ryan King said, "Thanks to everyone for being behind us. You're amazing."

Randy Layman was enjoying the moment. "This is pretty cool," he said. "Last night, we dominated them. Pretty sweet."

Kennedy acknowledged the roles of his assistant coaches, athletic director Don Bales, the high school faculty and administration, local businesses that provided good food and drink for the team, and the fans

"This is truly a family, a football family," he said.
