Is it just me, but does anyone else find the works of Jane Austen to be LAME?
I have read "Pride and Prejudice" and just watched "Sense and Sensibility" on PBS, and in both cases, was very disappointed. I don't know why this lightweight junk is considered classic.
What am I missing?

Yes. What Jane Austen works have YOU read? Do you have anything to say about my topic?

What were you disappointed about? I read Pride and Prejudice, and I thought it was a great book. Some of my friends who have read this have described what you're feeling, though. I've never read Sense and Sensibility, though, so I can't really tell you what you're missing on that one.

I watched Sense and Sensibility this weekend on PBS. It reminded me of Pride and Prejudice, just seemed like a very old fashioned soap opera to me. I kept thinking "Gee this is a classic. I must not be getting something here." The PBS show I saw was sort of entertaining in a lame way, nice costumes and sets with pretty people, but not much more than a time waster, IMO. I'm glad Your friends share my view. It's not just me.

Just curious if you like pre-1950 "B" movies?

I even remember watching an old account of the Abe Lincoln story that was grainy as heck and about as corny as it gets.

But I never was much in to too many silent movies though for the same reason I only watch a few foreign films. I'm too lazy to read subtitles. More accurately though it's because I spend so much time keeping up with the dialogue that I can't comprehend what's happening on the screen.

pre-1950's B movies are the best! Favorite flick is: THEM. (a sci-fi about mutant ants in the desert)
Ever watch the movie Dragnet? With Ben Alexander?
Who is your favorite "Scream Queen"?
Most beautiful actress EVER. . . . Gene Tierney.

I love old black and white movies. The Grapes of Wrath is my all time fave. I always need a whole box of Kleenex!
I like B and W movies from the 50's and early 60s too. Days of Wine and Roses is great, as is Manchurian Candidate, Dr. Strangelove, and a few others I can't think of right now.

There's your problem. Get your Jane Austen from a book not a boobtube.

I read Pride and Prejudice, as I said. It was just as lame as the PBS Sense ans Sensibility show, IMO.
