You can buy a kit that tests for pH, Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium levels for under twenty bucks at almost any garden center.

What is the reason for doing this? I have never tested and I have many beautiful gardens.

I guess it just depends on what you have in your yard or what you want to grow. Some plants require more acidic soil and others require it to be more alkaline.

For example, blueberries require the soil to be acidic...so it's important to test your soil for something like fruits and veggies especially...and really for anything, since landscaping is a job you want to get right the first time.

I know someone that lost over a hundred trees because they didn't test everything...what a bummer! :(

Go to Purdue Calument; the started as a agriculture school, and they still have the department. They can help you farmers out in the sticks with your problema.
