Owner requests liquor license for new location

More than five years after the controversial opening of Buddy & Pal's Place's popular Crown Point location, owner Tim Heidbreder said he has outgrown the building.

"It's time Buddy and Pal's goes to the next level," he said. "And that's what I'm looking to do. I want to have a sports bar like no other."

On Jan. 22, Heidbreder will ask the Crown Point Board of Zoning Appeals to approve a liquor license for the new location of Buddy & Pal's -- in his Millennium Park development.

Heidbreder said his present Summit Street location is stifled by limited parking and outdoor recreation. The new building would be 1,200 square feet larger than the 499 E. Summit St. facility and would have 170 more parking spots.

"Parking is an issue -- has always been an issue," Heidbreder said. "As the Crown Point population expands, our business has grown."

He said he wants his new location to mirror Buddy & Pals' Winfield location, with an outdoor patio to barbecue and a cafe. The new bar would maintain the same atmosphere and ambiance as its old location, he said.

When it first came to town, the Summit Street bar and grill was opposed by Bridgeport neighborhood residents, who said it disrupted the flow of traffic and caused more crime in the area.

Crown Point resident Rene Juarez, who lives in a house behind the bar, said he is excited about the prospect of Buddy & Pal's moving.

"As long as there's not another bar coming into the same building, it would be awesome," he said.

Heidbreder said he already has an interested buyer for the Summit Street building. The bar would be converted into a real estate and medical office.

If the BZA approves the liquor license for the new facility, Heidbreder said he will start construction and hope to have the location open by the 2007 football season

I think Mr. Heidbreder should concentrate more on improving the quality of his already exisitig operations, i.e. Winfield location. The service is poor, prices are somewhat elevated, some staff are very rude (especially to the older age groups). The so-called management is at best a joke. I could care less how much his empyees steal from him, but when they try to pad the bill on a customer thats just plain disgraceful! Patrons WATCH YOUR TAB!!! Customers being accosted by other patrons at the bar, in the restrooms, on the dance floor, and in the parking lot. THIS HAS GOT TO STOP!!! The after hours drinking parties are not only against the law,, but no good ever comes from them, i.e. check the recent headlines mentioning this very place! This place has gone through soooo many consigned restaurants (about one a year) that it has become somewhat of an inconvenience to his customers ( the present one is pretty good though). The only ntime the place is cleaned is in the morning after that debris collects for the rest of the day making the place look dirty and unkempt by evening hours.

Suggestions: 1. Have a REAL full time manager on duty at ALL times.
2. Hire a busboy/barback.
3. Train your staff to be courteous, honest, professional,
and respectful.
4. You are a sports bar...act like one!
5. Listen to your customer's advice, suggestions,
and complaints.
6. Get rid of the trouble makers (starting with the staff!)
7. As the owner visit more and get envolved.
8. Study your own tapes...you have numerous cameras to
see what is really going on!
9. Show some consistentcy.
10. As the owner show some responsibilty of ownership.
You have taken on the responsibilty of operating a
business. Then accept the reponsiblity of what is really
going on at your Winfield location. If not then SELL!
