Post subject:  M'ville dance club gets favorable recommendation

MERRILLVILLE | The dream of opening a dance club for young people his age moved closer to reality Wednesday for a 20-year-old Crown Point man.

The Board of Zoning Appeals unanimously approved a request from Vangel Sikoski to open the club in the former Bernacchi's Farm Market, 640 W. 81st Ave.

His request still needs to be approved by the Town Council before the club can open.

Sikoski said he will open the club in September if he does receive final approval.

"I'm very pleased," he said.

The board made several stipulations in its favorable recommendation, including a six-month review once the club is open, no serving of alcohol and a midnight curfew for those 18 and younger.

Board member Jack Swike peppered him with numerous questions, including why the club is aimed at patrons ages 16 to 22.

Sikoski said past successful businesses in the area have been geared to that age group. And he personally knows a number of 21- and 22-year-olds who would be interested in attending the club because they don't drink alcohol.

"They don't want to be on the bar scene," he said.

Resident Brian Deering also voiced concerns about mixing younger teens with those able to buy liquor.

He said he also worries about the possibility of drugs and sex at the club.

Concerns about extra traffic that might be generated and noise from music at the club were expressed by resident Dave Wilson.

The most positive comments came from Merrillville police Operations Cmdr. and Councilman Lance Huish, who said the town really needs something for young people to do.

He said he and his 17-year-old daughter have had some heart-to-heart talks and he agrees Sikoski should be given a chance.

"He's agreed to a six-month review and if there are any problems I'll be here to shut it down," Huish said.
