New train lines go in at the Gibson Yard in Hammond as crews work Oct. 10 to install a new facility for the Canadian fertilizer company Potash. Mayor Thomas McDermott Jr. announced this morning the world's largest fertilizer producer will locate a rail transfer facility in the city, creating about 25 permanent jobs.

Mayor Thomas McDermott Jr. announced Tuesday morning the world's largest fertilizer producer will locate a rail transfer facility in the city, creating about 25 permanent jobs.

Potash Corp., of Saskatoon, Canada, will spend about $64 million to build a 300-yard-long building just off Summer Street and Hump Road at the Gibson Yard, McDermott said Tuesday morning at City Hall.

It will take about 285 union construction workers to build the new facility, according to the city.

Indiana Harbor Belt Railway has been clearing land and laying new tracks at Gibson Yard for months in anticipation of Potash and other companies that may move there.
