Cabela's to begin hiring workers for Hammond store

HAMMOND | Cabela's, the outdoor outfitter scheduled to open here in October, will begin hiring about 400 workers Monday to staff the store.

Applications are being taken online at www.cabelas.com. They are located in the "careers" portion of the company's Web site.

There are full- and part-time job openings in retail, receiving, asset protection, deli and customer service. Beside specific qualifications for each job, applicants must have a high school diploma or the equivalent, and must be able to work the following: at least three out of four weekends a month; any day, including holidays; as well as opening and closing shifts. They also must pass a background check and a drug test.

The idea job candidates will be those who have outdoor knowledge and experience, the company said.

"Many customers come to Cabela's for advice and assistance on what products best meet their outdoor needs," according to a company news release. "Cabela's skilled specialists can outfit anglers, hunters and outdoors enthusiasts, making sure a customer’s recreational experience is the best it can be."

The store, under construction at the site of the former Woodmar Country Club, will be accessed from Indianapolis Boulevard near the southbound exit of Interstate 80-94. Plans call for it to open Oct. 18.

James Beckett Jr. recently was appointed general manager of the 185,000-square-foot store. Beckett, who moved to La Porte after his promotion to run Indiana's first Cabela's, is assembling the store's management team, including 19 department managers.

Prior to being promoted general manager of the Hammond store, Beckett held numerous management roles with Cabela’s. He had served as senior softlines manager and senior operations manager in Fort Worth, Texas, and as assistant operations manager in Wheeling, W.Va., and Hamburg, Pa. Beckett also held management positions with Lowe’s Home Improvement Warehouse in Old Bridge, N.J. and Pottsville, Pa.

"To be a store manager of Cabela’s is a dream come true for me," Beckett said. "It’s a great feeling going to work every day serving and outfitting people that love the outdoors as much as I do."

Did Cabela's live up to their promise about hiring "locals?"

Sure they did, I saw plenty of Hispanics working there. BTW, why don't YOU get a job and stay off the forum for awhile? I'm tire of supporting your crazy, d***** bag AZZ so you can post your moronic, stupid statements here.

IMO, Cabela's is a flop. I'd go to Bass Pro Shop over Cabela's any day.

What's the difference? I haven't been to either one.

Bass Pro Shop is awesome. They have a great restaurant inside called Islamorada Fish Company. It's the only place in Northwest Indiana where you can get Conch Fritters.

I also want to add that I think Bass Pro Shop has a more appropriate location.

Too bad they didn't plant one in Missouri, where the real hunters are.

Well, they would really be in business had they located on in Festus, which is between St. Louis and the bottom half, along the Mississippi River, where most people hardly buy their meat. They live off the wild-life.

Deer meat is pretty good. My bro goes to Kentucky every year to hunt with his friends. They bag a lot of dear meat.

Aww the little boy couldn't stand seeing the adults talk. He should come back and try to have discussions with us once he hits puberty.
