We are closer then you think. Mass production will bring prices down on battery / fuel cell systems. With high fuel prices and the concern for the environment the demand is there. I believe the problem is the Auto & Petro industry trying their best to slow things down by lobbying the policos in Washington as well buying up the battery & fuel cell technology patents & sitting on them. I say within 5 years there will be thousands of electric cars on the road.
