:drools: I can't believe they have this in Merrillville. I went there for the first time since my dad worked in Summit.

Actually it was a taste of DuPage County. Portillo's started in Villa Park and had more than 20 locations in DuPage and Kane County before they opened a restaurant in Chicago.

For me, by far the best thing on the Portillo's menu is the roast beef. Places like Munster Gyros and Madvek's (in Hammond) have hot dogs that may be just a tiny bit better, and a whole lot cheaper!

Its not roast beef. Its Italian beef. Roast beef is what you get at Zel's.

The hot dogs are all the same. Same supliers.

p.s Used to go to the little stand on North Avenue back in the day.

How do they cook the beef? Pan sautee it? Grill it? Deep fry it?

No. They roast it. So it is roast beef.

Any chance you grew up in New York City? You sound like it. You think the world revolves around your favorite places in the big city. How sad.

Since you apparently have nothing better to do than follow me around these boards, I'll answer your queries simply and succinctly.

1. According to your train of thought, there's no such thing as Italian Beef since its all roasted. Brilliant. Stupendous. So whats the thing they make at Portillo's in Merrilville? All Italian Beef is roasted. Does it then not make it Italian Beef?

2. No, I didn't grow up in NYC, I only lived there for three years. And they don't have Italian Beef there either. You don't get out much, do you?

3. Never said everything revolves around the "big city" (not sure if you mean Chicago or NY). You really must have some "big city" inferiority complex or something. I simply asked if there are any good beef stands around. If not, so be it. Whats so controversial or inciteful about that?

I'm not sure if it comes out of Portillos or Barnellis, but one of them has the most tender ribs I've ever had.

Barnelli's is the pasta portion of the establishment.

If you want great ribs, try The Patio in Orland Park. Unless of course you're anywhere near their original location in Bridgeview or their third location in Darien.
