Old Mill Pizzeria Bar and Grill
35 W. 73rd Ave
Merrillville, Indiana

Welcome to the new Old Mill

MERRILLVILLE | The smell of pizza filled the air as hundreds gathered Thursday to celebrate the new look of the Old Mill Pizzeria Bar and Grill.

Revelers gathered under a white tent behind the restaurant to enjoy the free fare and drinks.

Local real estate agent and developer Scott Reder and his family purchased Old Mill Pizzeria in March and immediately began a $150,000 restoration process.

The result -- a much needed face-lift for the 154-year-old building that also kept its identity intact.

"We were just trying to protect the integrity of the building as much as possible," Reder said.

Additions include new restrooms and a nonsmoking seating area that sits 75. The dropped-out ceiling in the bar was knocked out, exposing the original tongue and grooves.

A kitchen wall was also knocked out, expanding the bar by 25 to 35 seats. Additional plans include knocking down one more wall to provide seating for up to 75 more people in the bar area.

A new roof, six televisions and new staircases that lead to a 100-seat banquet hall upstairs are expected to be in place in two months.

Also this summer, cedar siding will be added to the outside of the building, and the deck will be expanded to fit 85 people, Reder said. All renovations are expected to be finished by August.

The Old Mill Pizzeria, 35 W. 73rd Ave., has a long history.

It once was a distillery, dance hall, candy store, school and mill for grinding grain. It is the oldest business structure still standing in Merrillville.

The idea behind Thursday night's party was to reintroduce Old Mill Pizzeria to the community, Reder said.

The Merrillville Chamber of Commerce helped celebrate by holding a ribbon-cutting ceremony with Reder and his family.

"The idea is to take the Old Mill to other towns in the future -- to expand the business," he said.

Since under new management, Reder said business has been booming.

"It's exceptional," he said. "We're selling up to 200 pizzas a night now."

HOURS: From 4 p.m. to 2 a.m. Monday through Thursday, and from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. Friday through Sunday.
ON THE MENU: Pasta, perch and wings are offered, and pizza is served until close.
