Dear Lois,

The plan you talk about, years ago, was indeed presented to the City Council to convert the old River Oaks Theaters building 9&10, which is a free standing building on Torrence immediately east of Torrence at the river, into a comedy club/supper club. It never materialized. A quick history lesson: Maxwell Sweeny's turned into Mainstreet, which turned into Kohl's, which is now Sam's Club. Anyway, my point is that you should check your facts before you post. But then again, you have 300+ posts on this weblog, and I only have 10 or so, meaning you are so obviously superior intellectually to me.

Take Care, CODE

Once again, Maxwell Sweeney's was a free standing building directly west of the theaters, and was not attached to River Oaks West main mall.

And, I refuse to get into a pissing contest on your intellect vs. mine.

Dear Lois,

You are right, Maxwell Sweeneys was in the building that was Santini's for years and is now Leona's. Spats Park Avenue was in the location that became Mainstreet, then Kohl's and now Sam's Club. Had to ask my Grandma, she's been living in Calumet City since 1960. And it was you who implied that I didn't know what I was talking about because I only had 4 posts on this weblog. The businessman who wanted the comedy & supper club wanted to put it in the vacant location that used to be River Oaks Theaters 9 & 10.

How much will this cost the taxpayers of Calumet City just to pursue a riverboat license? For what seems to be a lost cause, it sure seems like this will cost a lot of money just to convince the State Gaming Commission. (ie: attorney fees, traffic studies, public relations, etc., etc., etc.) And like Jerry Genova's outstanding legal fees, we will never get a return on the initial investment. Just kiss it good bye.
The Times wrote:
CALUMET CITY | Calumet City officials sat down with mayors from across the south suburbs and laid out plans to split the proceeds if the city snags the state's 10th gaming license.

Calumet City is one of seven municipalities vying for the license and tied for the fourth highest bid. Other players include Rosemont, Waukegan, Harvey, Stickney, Des Plaines and Country Club Hills.

1893 Entertainment Group's proposal in Calumet City includes the Columbian Exposition Casino & Entertainment Complex, a multi-use entertainment development next to Torrence Avenue and the Little Calumet River. It has proposed a 100,000-square-foot casino that is expected to create approximately 1,600 jobs and generate annual revenues approaching $325 million.

Here's the "Mayor's" plan. I think she's been taken, or worse yet, NUTS.

The Calumet City casino, which would be located on the west side of Torrence Avenue, about a mile north of Interstate 80, would have something like a retention pond outside that would be filled up to the level of the casino floor.

No, the water wouldn't actually flow into the casino, although that would be a cool idea. The Little Calumet River would flow around the casino site, but that wouldn't help it meet the legal definition of a riverboat casino under the law.

I guess she thinks the Little Calumet River is a clean body of water. YUK

Here's my opinion: I avoid the IL boats when I really want to go for entertainment in the casino.

I head for Hammond, and E.C. Ameristar. Why? For one, they haven't reportedly layed off 45 plus employees as Harrah's has...secondly, they pay out more. Lastly, you don't have to leave your machine to have a smoke. As some CEO reported from Harrah's in past news reports, gambling, smoking and drinking go hand in hand, although I don't agree with the drinking part.

If you remove a person from focusing (yes, focusing) on their machine and play, and force them to go to another place to smoke, you most likely see them lose the focus and go home.

Lastly, a casino in Calumet City would be a "doom". If you read the Post-Tribune yesterday, the Horseshoe revenues shot up, but short from one year ago. Majestic I and II are selling off assets, and are in a bind. Ameristar reported less revenue as all four combined. The economy changed. People are losing houses and it hasn't hit rock bottom yet.

May I suggest a new revenue to all the Calumet City taxpayers? Demand that the aldermen and alderwomen, the majesty herself to give up that expensive health insurance coverage they created for themselves, the life-insurance Ms. Michelle took out, the pensions that ensure they make more after they well leave office. Demand they pay into an ethical insurance plan, that gives money back into the taxpayers' pockets.

I can't imagine buying even at the Dollar Store in Crook County, while Cal City, Stroger and Blago are in office with the high sales tax on even a dollar.

Why has the question of why Genova has not been required to repay the city for legal expenses been followed up on and being answered?

Back to the casino: even if it's built on solid ground, it'll sink. The economy, the average income, the city's image is a no-no to whether or not one should be placed there.

I would go to a rich community, knowing that rich people play the slots more, and you're more likely to win. The more the machine is played, the more it pays out. Put it in a depressed neighborhood, you're wasting your dough.

Keep on dreaming, Michelle. Your ship sunk long ago, before the thought of a floating, stand-still boat with a moat.

P.S. - Where's Genova's money to pay back those citizens in Cal City, ya know, the taxpayers that forked out his legal fees? I think you owe an answer to the very people who pay your salary before Pam takes over.

Knowing the new mayor Pam, that's the first thing she'll go after. She's for OTHERS, the taxpayers. You've always been about yourself and your chronic, "keep it behind the doors" aldermen.

Don't waste your money running again. I can tell you Pam will WIN.

In all actuality, I do not believe that Ms. Cap owes the city anything. If she had any lawsuits in the past, the F.O.P. attorney would have handled it. Not the city. If she was awarded any settlements, that too, should have been handled by the city insurance.

Genova, on the other hand, PROMISED THE TAXPAYERS THAT IF HE WAS FOUND GUILTY OF ANY INDICTMENTS AGAINST HIM THAT HE WOULD REPAY THE CITY, THAT'S HOW CONFIDENT HE WAS OF HIS 'NOT GUILTY' plea. He lied. He knew he could never repay this city, and never had plans to do so! Why do you think he does not show his face here.........not guilty, right!

A source saw former Mayor Genova on 11-4 Election Day outside The Drake Hotel (Michigan Ave. & Walton).

Maybe he lives in a box on Lower Wacker Drive!
