Creator of TV cartoon Rocky and Bullwinkle dies

CARMEL, Calif. (AP) -- Pioneering TV cartoon artist Alexander Anderson Jr. - who created Rocky the flying squirrel, Bullwinkle the moose and Dudley Do-Right the Canadian mountie - has died at age 90.

Anderson's wife, Patricia, told The Associated Press that her husband, a longtime resident of Pebble Beach, Calif., died Friday at an assisted living facility in Carmel. He was suffering from Alzheimer's disease.

With the goggle-wearing Rocky leading his somewhat slow but good-natured friend, Bullwinkle, the duo battled villains Boris and Natasha, agents of the nation of Pottsylvania, in the fictional town of Frostbite Falls, Minn.

The show spawned movies and memorable phrases, such as Rocky's "Hokey smoke" and Bullwinkle's "Hey, Rocky, watch me pull a rabbit out of a hat."

The inspiration for Bullwinkle came from a dream Anderson had in which he was playing poker with friends and a moose doing "silly card things" was sitting next to him, Patricia Anderson said.

The character's name came from a car dealership in Berkeley called "Bullwinkel Motors," which her husband thought was funny, she said.

Anderson told the San Francisco Chronicle in 1991 that he found there was "something majestic" about a moose.

'Hawaii Five-0' Actor James MacArthur Dead at 72

Stage and screen actor James MacArthur, who played "Danno" in the original version of television's "Hawaii Five-0," died Thursday at age 72.

MacArthur's agent, Richard Lewis, said the actor died in Florida of "natural causes," but no direct cause was specified.

In a career that spanned more than four decades, MacArthur was most recognized for his role as Detective Danny "Danno" Williams on "Hawaii Five-0," which aired from 1968 to 1980. Episodes often ended with detective Steve McGarret, the lead character, uttering what became a pop culture catch phrase: "Book 'em, Danno."

Oh say can you see
By the dawn's early light
What so proudly we hail
In the twilight's last gleaming
Whose bright stripes and broad stars
In the perilous night
For the ramparts we watched
uh, da-da-da-da-da-daaaa
And the rocket's red glare
Lots of bombs in the air
Gave proof to the night
That we still had our flag
Oh say does that flag banner wave
Over a-a-all that's free
And the home of the land
And the land of the free!

Don Meredith, 'Monday Night Football' Analyst, Dead at 72

Image

Don Meredith, the former 'Monday Night Football' co-host, has died at the age of 72.

Meredith passed away in Santa Fe, NM of complications from emphysema and a brain hemorrhage he suffered on Sunday. He previously suffered a stroke in 2004.

Meredith was probably unknown to many younger TV viewers, but "Dandy Don" was everywhere in the 1970s and '80s. His trademark while calling games, besides his casual demeanor and humor, was singing 'Turn Out The Lights' when it was obvious that the game was indeed over.

Don Van Vliet, better-known as Captain Beefheart, one of the most influential American musicians of the 1960s and 1970s and avant garde frontman of the Magic Band, has died in California, aged 69. A representative of the Michael Werner Gallery, in New York, which hosted several of his art exhibitions, confirmed his death from complications from multiple sclerosis in a statement yesterday.
