Redistricting hearings include Crown PointMar 20, 2011 08:04AM
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Members of the Indiana House and Senate election committees will hold eight public hearings around the state this week on the upcoming redrawing of state legislative and congressional district maps.
The hearings are planned for Friday in Lafayette, Crown Point, Terre Haute and Evansville, and on Saturday in Elkhart, Fort Wayne, Jeffersonville and Columbus.
The Republican-controlled House and Senate will oversee the redistricting of the state’s 150 legislative seats and Indiana’s nine congressional seats, which are redrawn each 10 years based on U.S. Census information.
No proposed maps have been prepared, but Senate Minority Leader Vi Simpson says Democrats weren’t consulted about the hearings.
Republican Senate leader David Long says the hearings are an unprecedented effort to get public comment on redistricting and that Democrats aren’t being shut out.
