Postal service to look at Indiana consolidations

September 15, 2011 2:12PM

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The U.S. Postal Service says it plans to study the possible closure of mail processing centers in some of Indiana’s largest cities, including Gary, South Bend, Terre Haute, Lafayette and BloomingtonThe postal service said Thursday it will look at consolidating the operations of as many as five regional centers into Indianapolis. Those five centers are in Bloomington, Kokomo, Lafayette, Muncie and Terre Haute. It says it also will look at consolidating the Terre Haute operations in Evansville, South Bend’s with Fort Wayne, and Gary’s in Bedford Park, Ill.

The postal service expects to complete the studies early next year.

The studies come as the postal service aims to increase efficiency and improve productivity amid shrinking mail volume. First-class mail is down 25 percent over five years nationwide.

Another casualty of the print media going the way of newspapers and magazines, but this time a government union is the victim going the way of dinosaurs and buggy-whip manufacturers.

Kiss those union bennies goodbye

Chalk it up to more jobs lost under President Dumbo's administration.

Post Office is going out of business. Simple as that. But nobody under 40 will really notice a difference. If you send hard copy you FedEx. As Arc said the union bennies & a changing marketplace made the post office as useful as an old rotary dial bell phone that requires an operator to connect you to the other line. I don't believe I would favor tax dollars going to prop it up. With luck a private company will take it over and streamline the operations assuming the government will not try & tinker with the business model. Short of that I'm not sure we lose much of anything but junk mail.
