Speaking through his prophet, Times columnist Rich James, the First Congressional District was informed Sunday that its Congressman Pete Visclosky is angry at his constituency and out to impose his will. What's more, WE, the People, are supposed to love it! How's that for a classic inversion of political status and the tail wagging the dog?

Equally bad, Visclosky has run out patience when it comes to local approval for added taxes to fund suburbanite commuter trains out of Lowell and Valparaiso. Indeed, the congressman has not only set a deadline for conformance to his will concerning We, the People, Visclosky has angrily laid it on the line, according to James.

Wow! When did Visclosky's status undergo an upgrade from the representative and agent of the People to that of the People's boss? Last I heard, WE, the People, are the principals here, and the congressman is our man on Capitol Hill. Now it seems he's giving the orders and We, the People, are here simply to obey our master. Go figure.

Angered by the resistance in the People of the First District to acquiesce to more taxation (and this for the benefit and convenience of suburban commuters) James has volunteered to carry water for Pete and utterly bias his views of the congressman's subsidizing gambit. To hear James interpret it, Visclosky is now issuing orders. Apparently, except for James, Pete's arguments to fund the prospective convenience of White Flight suburban commuters has, thus far, failed to persuade a majority of People. Is the congressman, via James, perhaps displacing/dumping frustration and impatience with himself?

So then, because he cannot find the rationale to convince the whole of the First District to accept more taxation for the benefit of the suburban commuter few, the next best thing is to commandeer and channel James' journalistic bias to bypass the People altogether. To make it palatable, it is most expedient to make the presentation of his gambit strictly to other officials and representative agents.

Indeed, what's not to love? Especially loveable is "...Visclosky said the time for talk about the need for expanded commuter rail is over." The need? Whose need? Not mine? Nor have I heard a majority voice, from the People, publicly declaring such a need. Not even from south county suburban commuters, who suddenly find themselves inconvenienced by their pursuit of class status and White Flight, because it will entail continued long commutes to work. Maybe a referendum is the cure?

Meanwhile, the People will weep for the inconvenience. As for Rich James. Clearly, not only showing his age, but I wonder if he is using his open bias to mask a personal interest -- and the People be damned. Consider these gems:

"Imagine jumping on a train in Lowell or St. John rather than driving north to catch one in East Chicago or Hammond." (Especially if you've succeed in externalizing the cost of suburban transportation. This tidy subsidization renders the class status of urban Flight not just safe and convenient, but ideal.)

"Except for the usual south county isolationists, support for expanded train service is strong." Really? Here James seems to shamelessly abuse his journalistic status by introducing, given the ambiguity, so much vagueness it can only be psychologically reconciled as a proposition of fact seeking to induce a suspension of disbelief -- a fiction. Plato was the first to publicly identify this ruse and called it the Big Lie. This device is the bane of all social and political organizations because it implicitly sanctions the right to lie under the rubric of the public good --- if you've the nerve --- and far too many leaders in these organizations readily subscribe to this stratagem.

Arguably, it seems James has taken on Visclosky's concern and its frustration in a feat of pure identification and transference. In terms of the column's content and time frame, it's hard to tell who is actually arguing the gambit or whether James is exploiting summarization to put words into Visclosky's mouth. The premise of James' column reads, "About a month ago, Visclosky said the time for talk about the need for expanded commuter rail is over."

I believe James' pickled subjectivity and bias is so identified with Visclosky's needs that any claim to integrity in this column has been willingly sacrificed in order to advance his patron's will. They are fused as One. Consistent with this, I believe there is good reason to doubt both the so-called "need" and the wide support for added taxation to fund expansion. That these positions are inflated if not fictional, arguably the result of their impatience and frustration. For why, if the proposition is so favorable, are the People still unwilling to be further burdened with the costs of funding it?

Consequently, I heartily recommend the two men take time out to further reflect and begin relying on the effect of more fiber in their diet. A bran muffin each morning ought to do the trick.
