Authorities warn vote fraud danger high in 2007 in NW Indiana

January 1, 2007 (CROWN POINT, Ind.) - The Lake County prosecutor and Indiana's attorney general are warning that northwestern Indiana's 2007 municipal elections could be plagued by the absentee ballot fraud seen in previous elections.

Lake County Prosecutor Bernard Carter says he and Attorney General Steve Carter "are going to be watching for" signs of voter fraud during the 2007 elections.

Both men said they hope they have remedied that public perception by charges filed against 53 people who face 200 felonies alleging that they illegally meddled in others' absentee voting.

An investigation into the 2003 primary prompted the Indiana Supreme Court to order a new election after it found that longtime East Chicago Mayor Robert Pastrick's victory was tainted with corruption by his campaign.

That's real nice, only one problemo~it seems for ANY reason one can get an absentee ballot! I don't remember all the reasons, but when I read them, many can vote by ballot, even if they are STILL in the city, county....and still working! I would cut it tow to two, certified disabled, or sick, and if you re GONE in the military. But of course there are always "legal" exemptions................so what's the use?

That's why the Voter ID law was just a load. Absentee ballots have always been an instrument of fraud in Lake County, and the Voter ID law does nothing at all about that. If cleaning up elections was the point of the Voter ID law, which I doubt, they have failed.

Voter ID was JUST a political ploy to appease the anti-immigrantio groups! Why should, honest voters need to have a voter ID? There's no worry here!

My vote didn't count in the primary last May because I didn't have an acceptable ID, and I had no way tro get to Crown POInt to appear in person to make my provisional ballot count. I understand why it is a bad law.

Free: Just get ready for next time. I had a bit of hassle where I voted, but everything turn out right. The judges who worked the poll, didn't what line I was supposed to get in. I went to two lines, as I was told, and both were wrong. But, I finally made it, after showing my ID, again.

I have a drivers license again now. There won't be a problem now.

That is the dumbest thing you've ever said.

We are trying to get MORE people to exercise their right to vote and you think that just because you're in town you need to show up at the polls? Ask Tiger about that one - anything can happen last minute!

Heck, Florida lets you either come to a polling place up to 2 weeks before election day or vote absentee because they want people MORE to vote. Other states are playing with internet voting, but I'm not sold on that one yet.

It's one thing to crack down on absentee fraud but there are ways to help curb that including methods as simple as having to go to CP in person and showing your ID to get the ballot or having election workers come to your home or a common event with a member of each party running to verify proper id is presented.

But I guess it's easy to take the lazy way out when your guy is in office, huh? ;)

Make it simple, bud. If the person is in town, and is able to, he/she, better get their butts over to the polling place. Just look at the official reasons, even they don't say the things you do! Only completely diasable people(like you, Mirage) can have the absentee ballot, plus the military.

You mean in Indiana and I think that needs to change. As cited, other states are actually trying to make casting a vote easier for those eligible to vote.

Certifiable paper ballots - period. Until that happens the elections aren't safe. Hell, you can get a copy of the program off the internet to hack voting machines.
