Cops: Teen robbed stores for prom money
M'ville police arrest three in armed holdups
MERRILLVILLE | Prom night was shaping up to be a fun night for a Merrillville High School senior, he told police.
But with cash short in supply, he decided to join up with two other teens to rob at gun point clerks at two local gas stations and a donut shop, police Detective Jeff Rice said.
"One of the suspects told detectives he was getting ready to graduate and needed the money for the prom," Rice said.
The 19-year-old student was one of three teens arrested by police early Thursday morning following an armed robbery at Speedway, 9299 Broadway, Rice said. Police have declined to release names of the suspects until charges are filed.
Rice anticipates those charges, including armed robbery, battery and possession of a firearm, may be filed through the Lake County Prosecutor's office today.
The three teens, including a 16-year from Gary and an 18-year-old from Merrillville, admitted their part in the most recent Speedway robbery as well as two other cases, Rice said.
Those robberies include one reported to police early Wednesday morning at another Speedway, 3990 W. 81st Ave., and one reported on the morning of March 9 at Dunkin' Donuts, 2050 W. 81st Ave.
