Read in the paper about the bike and jogging trails linking the Chicago lakefront through Indiana all the way to the Michigan border. Sounds like a cool idea. It would be nice if we could move the smokestacks from the lakefront. But I guess that is asking too much.

It's sad that much of our lakefront is waste dumps and polluting factories. It is going to take a long time but hopefully some day the mess left over from the industrial revolution is cleaned up and the lakefront is once again as I intended it.

Big thinking on Visclosky's part - but that's how big changes happen. I think it is a bold move and will take time, but you have to start sometime and while it may be an ambitious plan, any improvements will be better than what we have now.

Chicago's Lakefront parks and public areas started with Daniel Burnham's ambition. Let's hope our kids and grandkids will see the fruits of this effort.

Spearheaded by U.S. Rep. Pete Visclosky, the plan seeks to recapture at least 75 percent of the Lake Michigan shoreline, from Whiting to Portage, to create an area for public use similar to the one adjacent to Chicago's Lake Shore Drive. The project also includes a minimum 200-foot setback from the shoreline for all new structures and a link between pedestrian and bicycle trails from the Illinois state line to Porter County.

There is a non-profit group composed of citizens from Lake, Porter, and LaPorte counties that actively advocates building more trails and trail connections in NW Indiana called C4, Calumet Citizens for Connecting Communities. Their web site is http://www.cc4cc.org. They monitor and report Marquette Greenway (that's what it's called, not the Lakefront Greenway Plan) developments amongst others. C4 also advocates for making NW Indiana more bicycle and pedestrian friendly. They meet once per month at the NIRPC office in Porter County. Details are on the web site. C4 members are actively engaged in things like letter writing campaigns to secure funding for trails, attending town council, planning commission, and park commission meetings in support of trails, trail clean-up, map making, etc. Join C4 and help make the change you want to see!
