To the caller who said the reason the Miller businesses had closed was because of crime in Gary, I think you need to wake up and look around. Crime and murders in Gary have gone down tremendously. And we're proud of it. We don't know what the reason is, but they have gone down. Maybe the problem with the businesses was that the MIller residents have disassociated themselves from the Gary community.

I recently saw three cars go through the red light at the corner of Broadway and U.S. 30. Where are the Merrillville police?

This is Black Oak calling. The weeds are taller than a person, and we have no close-by fire station anymore. This could be disastrous, and we are part of the city, like it or not. We were annexed in 1976

Why don't recycling places just quit paying for scrap copper, catalytic converters and other valuables or require some kind of official documentation as to ownership? I say set up a government recycle center for copper and other valuables.

No excuse for ineptness

It's pretty hard to get excited about a new Town Hall or a renovated gazebo when you have 3 feet of raw sewage floating around in your family room. Why don't the town manager and Town Council president bring the town infrastructure up to par before embarking on their pet projects? If this were the first major flooding in town, one might excuse the ineptness, but this is getting ridiculous. -- Highland

Wake up and vote

The people of Highland need to wake up. The council members want a new Town Hall. What for? The building commission doesn't need it, as Highland is almost fully developed, except for a few out lots. What they really need is an office large enough for the water department, as they have overgrown their space. Why not just let them get a new location? And use the money for a bigger sewer system and pumping station. -- Highland

I recently drove past the closed fire station on Randolph Street in the Miller section of Gary. On the front of the station is a big, yellow sign that reads SAFE HAVEN, with the icon of a mother and child. My question is, how can this be a safe haven if the station is closed?

Maybe the Miller business closings have nothing to do with Gary. Maybe it's the economy, coupled with older folks retiring. Stop looking for a place to lay blame.

Is McCain only one?

I was wondering if I have this wrong. Were there any other POWs in Vietnam beside John McCain, or was he the only one? I am getting tired of him telling us about his great sacrifice. I had family members in World War II who never talked about those experiences. But I guess they were not running for president or writing a book for money. They always told me the ones who talked about it are the ones who never saw much action at all. Oh well, whatever it takes, I guess. -- Lowell

Two weeks ago, a friend from Illinois and I were golfing at Forest Park in Valparaiso. On one of the fairways along Harrison Boulevard, a deer ran out of the woods and crossed in front of us. My friend gasped when she saw it heading toward the road. But the deer stopped, looked both ways, crossed the street and ran into the woods. My friend looked at me, somewhat bewildered, and said, "You know, Indiana deer are smarter than Illinois deer."

To the man who stopped and pulled my son's truck out of the mud on County Road 700 North on Sunday morning, thank you; you are a good Samaritan. May you be paid back 100 times over. To the county police officer who taunted my son after his accident and left him there in the dark late Saturday night, you are a bum. May you, too, get paid back 100 times over.

Actually McCain hasn't mentioned it, You must be having a flash back to John Kerry in 2004 who couldn't shut up about it and "reported for duty".

How can you build a major highway along a river that has been prone to flooding in the past and NOT take into consideration the topography of the area to include some sort of additional drainage solutions or elevating the area?
