Lake Superior Court Judge Thomas Stefaniak Jr., refused to reduce the bond for a Gary man who was on probation for reckless homicide when he was charged with dealing in a controlled substance in May.

Gijeon D. Spence, 26, of 5125 Georgia St., pleaded guilty to reckless homicide in November 2006 in the 2004 shooting death of Steve Trass, 27, of Gary, during an argument at 1541 Georgia St.

Spence was sentenced to 15 months of probation and time served.

Spence spent 324 days in the Lake County Jail.

He originally was indicted in 2005 for voluntary manslaughter, punishable by a maximum 50-year prison sentence.

Defense attorney Roseann Ivanovich said her client had almost finished probation when he was charged with dealing drugs from the Delaney Community Housing Development.

Spence's mother, Velita Spence, testified she needs her son's help at home because she is a dialysis patient and her husband is bed-ridden.

Ivanovich asked for a $1,500 cash bond.

Spence, whose probation has been revoked twice in the reckless homicide case, has missed court on traffic offenses and has a history of drug use in the past, deputy prosecutor Michelle Jatkiewicz said.

He has a Sept. 10 hearing on the probation revocation. Spence's bond in the drug case is $150,000, or $15,000 cash.

Stefaniak found that Spence's risk of failing to appear in court was medium and that he poses a danger to the community. "The defendant has a clear history of making bad decisions," the judge said.

Police are looking for a Gary man charged with two separate incidents involving a handgun on the same day.

A Tolleston woman told Detective LaRia Crews she was walking out of her home with her children Aug. 2 when Mark Williams, 25, drove by and saw her talking to a man.

She said Williams struck the man with a gun and threatened to kill him, the probable cause affidavit states.

Later that day, Williams returned to the house and argued with her, pushing the woman to the ground and choking her.

The victim told Crews that Williams pointed his gun at her and fired at her from about four feet away, the affidavit states.

Williams is charged with pointing a firearm, criminal recklessness and battery.

The paroled killer suspected in shooting two people early Friday was on parole in 1983 when he shot and killed a Gary man, court records state.

Wilfredo S. Almodovar, 55, was charged this weekend with two counts of attempted murder, two counts aggravated battery, reckless driving and resisting law enforcement.

Almodovar was arrested at the conclusion of a chase that began when Patrolman Derek Gilliam recognized the tan Buick as the vehicle linked to a double shooting.

The chase ended when Almodovar drove his car into state Rep. Charlie Brown's SUV as the lawmaker headed west on U.S. 20.

Shannon White, 22, and Michael Kinsey, 22, told Detective James Gonzales they went to a mobile home at 6632 E. U.S. 20 about 1:40 a.m. Friday looking for a female friend.

As they waited in a car, Almodovar approached, asked them if they had a problem, then started shooting at them, the probable cause affidavit states.

White ran to Mosley Motel for help while Kinsey fell trying to get out of the car.

Almodovar "walked around the vehicle and shot him two more times while lying there," the affidavit states.

The suspect killed Darroel Pittman in 1983 by shooting the victim in the head as the man knelt on the ground, court records state.

Then Lake County Superior Court Judge James Letsinger sentenced him to 50 years in prison, noting Almodovar had violated his parole. He had a 1978 conviction for assault and battery with intent to kill, court records state.

Gary man arrested for fleeing scene

Police arrested a west side man Monday minutes after he allegedly struck another car, then fled the scene.

Lt. Thomas Branson saw the maroon Chevrolet described by witnesses as the car that hit another vehicle at 8th Avenue and Grant Street about 8 a.m., Cmdr. Samuel Roberts said. Branson followed the car, broadcasting its movements until marked units stopped the vehicle in the 500 block of West 21st Avenue.

Cpl. Dawn Westerfield arrested Charles K. Willis, 47, who told police he fled because he didn’t have insurance. Willis faces charges of leaving the scene of an accident, resisting law enforcement and reckless driving, Roberts said.

A Gary man faces four felony charges after he was arrested on suspicion of shooting a Portage man during a drug deal.

Bryant Young Jr. was being held without bond at Porter County Jail on Wednesday after Portage police arrested him on suspicion of shooting Devon Starkey Jr., 18, at Sundance apartment complex in Portage on Tuesday, said Detective Capt. Terry Swickard.

Police spoke with the Porter County Prosecutor's office Wednesday and agreed to charges of aggravated battery, battery, criminal recklessness and pointing a firearm, Swickard said. The charges had not been formally filed as of Wednesday afternoon, according to the Porter County court officials.

The incident began after Starkey and his girlfriend called Young and asked him to deliver an ounce of marijuana worth $180 Tuesday, Swickard said.

When Young arrived at Starkey's home at Sundance apartments, Starkey smelled the marijuana then struck Young in the left eye and fled in attempt to steal the marijuana. As Starkey was running away, Young pulled a .45-caliber gun and shot Starkey, hitting him in the left bicep, police reports said. Starkey dropped the marijuana, which Young picked up, police said.

Police received phone calls reporting the gunshot about 10 p.m.. Young left the scene, but was arrested later that night when he went to the police station and confessed.

Starkey was taken to St. Mary Medical Center in Hobart, where he was treated and released. He awaits surgery to remove bullet fragments, Swickard said.

A 49-year-old Gary man arrested early Wednesday inside the Elbow Room on 25th Avenue was charged later that day with intimidation and pointing a firearm, police said.

Richard D. Lewis faces up to eight years in prison if convicted of the charges.

A man who has known Lewis for 20 years told Detective Jeff Hemphill that Lewis entered his home uninvited and knocked on the bedroom door.

A Gary man confessed to stabbing his 78-year-old father to death with a kitchen knife in their Gary home after a dispute late Monday, police said Wednesday.

The man faces a murder charge based on accusations he stabbed Willie Edmond to death in the Johnson Street home, said Detective Cpl. Edward Gonzalez. Court records identified the suspect as Glenn Edmond.

Officers found the suspect bloodied in the home after the stabbing, Gonzalez said. Willie Edmond was pronounced dead at 11:25 p.m. Monday, said a spokeswoman for the Lake County coroner's office.

Glenn Edmond, who is in his 40s, had been arrested on previous domestic-related charges, but he was never convicted, Gonzalez said. Willie Edmond's wife was home when he was killed, Gonzalez said.

Gonzalez could not say what fueled the dispute and the stabbing.

Glenn Edmond was in custody at the Gary police station Wednesday awaiting transfer to the Lake County Jail, Gonzalez said.

Detectives suspect "a family issue" led to the stabbing death of a 78-year-old Gary man in his home late Monday night.

Police arrested a relative of victim Willie Edmond after the killing in Edmond's Johnson Street home, said Gary police Cmdr. Sam Roberts. Edmond was pronounced dead at 11:25 p.m. Monday, said a spokeswoman for the Lake County coroner's office. Edmond died of multiple stab wounds in an apparent homicide, the spokeswoman said.

Detectives questioned the relative Tuesday. Roberts could not say how many people witnessed the killing or explain any motivation behind the stabbing.

Gary man gets 60 years for robbing seniors

Rosa Deen watched her husband, Floyd, crumple to the ground late last year as they were robbed by two men outside their home.

"All I saw was the silver pistol ... a stream of blood out of his mouth like a fountain," the 77-year-old woman said, her voice trembling. "He went down, and I thought he was dead."

Floyd Deen, 73, said he was knocked in the head with the gun and lost several teeth. The couple were among those targeted in a series of thefts aimed at senior citizens in the region, police said.

Brandon Green, 22, was sentenced Thursday in Lake Criminal Court to 60 years in prison for his part in the robberies.

The Gary man pleaded guilty to four counts of felony robbery -- one count each in four separate cases, court records show.

Four victims testified at Green's sentencing hearing Thursday regarding their fear during the armed robberies. Lake County Criminal Court Judge Thomas Stefaniak Jr. read a letter written by a fifth victim.

"He chose them because of what they looked like and their inability to fight back," Deputy Prosecutor Michelle Jatkiewicz said.

Green said he was bullied into participating in the crimes by the other co-defendants. The defendant had a history of mental health problems, defense attorney Lemuel Stigler said.

Green, Milo Joseph Walker Jr. and Landon Shaw, all Gary residents, were charged with multiple felonies -- including robbery, battery and carjacking -- in connection with at least 24 crimes in Chicago, Hammond, Calumet City, Burnham, Lansing and Dolton, court records state.

The men were arrested after a months-long investigation by the Illiana Gang Task Force, which includes 30 officers from 10 Illinois communities and eight Indiana communities.

Both Walker's and Shaw's cases are pending, according to the Lake County prosecutor's office.

An apparent botched drug deal resulted in the shooting of an 18-year-old Portage man Tuesday night and the arrest of a 21-year-old Gary man.

Portage Police Detective Sgt. Bill Mesich said police were called to 5950 Sundance in the Sundance apartment complex off Willowcreek Road at 10:04 p.m. on a report of a shooting.

When police arrived, they found Devon Starkey, 18, who had been living at the address, had been shot in the upper left arm with a .45-caliber bullet. He was transported to St. Mary Medical Center in Hobart and treated and released.

According to police, Starkey and a friend, Brittany Foley, 18, of 518 Camelot, wanted to purchase marijuana. They called an acquaintance of Foley's, Bryant Young Jr., 21, of 4080 Ohio St., Gary. Starkey and Foley offered to purchase $180 worth of marijuana from Young and offered him an extra $10 if he would deliver it to Portage.

When Young arrived at the apartment complex, Foley allegedly began talking to Young from the passenger side of the car while Starkey was "checking out" the marijuana from the driver's side.

At one point, Starkey allegedly struck Young in the left eye, splitting his eye open, said Mesich, and ran with the marijuana. Young then allegedly pulled the .45-caliber weapon and began shooting at Starkey, striking him in the arm, only inches from his chest.

Starkey dropped the marijuana and Young recovered it and left the scene.

Young later came to the Portage police station to turn himself in and give police his side of the story, said Mesich. He was arrested and transported to Porter County Jail.

Young was charged with aggravated battery, battery, criminal recklessness and pointing a firearm Wednesday.

Mesich said police are still investigating the incident and will talk to prosecutors today to determine what possible charges will be filed against Young, Starkey and Foley, if any.

Several witnesses saw a Gary man approach and abruptly gun down an acquaintance in south Gary late Wednesday night, police said.

Police on Wednesday sought the man who fired at least three shots into Lewis A. Reid Jr., 36, of the 100 block of Glen Park Avenue, near 53rd Avenue and Broadway near the Merrillville border, Gary police Sgt. Michael Jackson said. Investigators know the suspect they seek. The suspect once dated Reid's sister, Jackson said.

"The guy just pulled out this gun and started firing," Jackson said.

The suspect has one eye, Jackson said. Jackson described the suspect as a 33-year-old black man with a medium complexion. He is about 5 feet 9 inches tall and 150 pounds and has short hair or no hair.

"According to all the witnesses, he's the one that pulled the gun and did the shooting," Jackson said.

Friends and family members said the shooting followed a dispute between the men. Reid's brother, Lewis Reid III, called the gunman a "coward." He said the gunman shot Lewis A. Reid Jr. without leaving him a chance to defend himself.

Lewis A. Reid Jr. was in school for truck driving, and he spent Wednesday helping his family roof a house, Lewis Reid III said. He recently played street basketball with his siblings, his brother said. He was trying to burn off a small gut, his brother said. Lewis A. Reid Jr. left behind a daughter.

Witnesses told police Lewis A. Reid Jr. walked out of a friend's apartment before the gunman cut him off and shot him, Jackson said.

Reid was taken to the Methodist Hospitals Southlake Campus in Merrillville, where he died at 12:34 a.m. Wednesday, according to a spokesman for the Lake County coroner's office.
